The North Island region
Gaze across tranquil waters that fill the crater bowls of extinct volcanoes. Cruise, kayak, ski or sail on their shimmering surface. Fish for trophy-winning trout in the lakes and the streams that feed them. Or ride the wild rapids and waterfalls along some of the more turbulent stretches. Whatever your pleasure, Rotorua's stunning natural setting offers endless possibilities for relaxation, fun and adventure in, on and around our waterways.
Auckland / Kohimarama area
Auckland is built on a narrow isthmus between two harbours, and is surrounded by extinct volcanoes and picturesque islands. The city is known as the 'City of Sails' due to the number of yachts which sail in the harbours and the adjoining Hauraki Gulf.
With a mild climate and stunning natural surroundings to call their own, Aucklanders are bound to lead a healthy outdoor lifestyle.
As well as boating, the plentiful beaches of the City of Sails offer a multitude of water sports. Heading east from the city around the waterfront, the sandy beaches of Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St Heliers not only offer safe swimming, but also a food-lover's choice of restaurants and cafes.
In contrast with these calm city beaches are the relatively untouched and delightfully isolated black sand, wild surf beaches of the West Coast: nature lovers will appreciate the gannet colony at Muriwai; and remember the movie "the Piano" with the heroine playing the piano on Karekare beach in all her Victorian finery?
For a relaxing view of the harbour, there are plenty of ferry and scenic cruises operating to many of the 47 islands in the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park. Waiheke is the most visited of the gulf islands, with plenty of picturesque bays and beaches good for swimming and sea kayaking. The island attracts all kinds of artistic folk, who exhibit their work in galleries and craft shops. There are restaurants and vineyards aplenty.
Back in the central city is the urban icon of Auckland. At 328m high, the Sky Tower is the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. From any of its three observation towers there is a magnificent 360 degree view of Auckland city. Catch the high speed glass elevator up and dine at the cafe or restaurant. The more adventurous can climb up with Vertigo Climb and then bungy jump back down! The Sky City complex also houses theatres, a casino, restaurants and bars.
Five minutes drive along the waterfront from Kohimarama exists the subterranean world of Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World. Penguins parade in a wonderland of ice and snow, while sharks, giant eels, stingrays and scores of shimmering fish swim the ocean-like depths.
Spend a wild day at the Auckland Zoo. You can experience the expanse of the African plains with Pridelands; an enormous underwater viewing window enables you to come eye to eye with sealions as they gracefully swim throughout their wonderful deep water home; enter the lush tranquility of a South American Rainforest, where monkeys swing just an arm's length away; the zoo’s Kiwi & Tuatara House is the only public viewing nocturnal house featuring kiwi and tuatara in Auckland.
Auckland War Memorial Museum tells the story of New Zealand, from our unique flora and fauna and our history at war, to our priceless collection of Maori and Pacific treasures. The Museum’s galleries showcase the natural, cultural, and social history of New Zealand. For kids, two award-winning Discovery Centres provide hands-on fun and exploration of the natural world and human culture. Housed in one of the nation's finest heritage buildings and with spectacular views of Auckland City and the harbour, Auckland Museum is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
Rainbow's End is a first-rate fun park experience filled with world-class rides including the log flume, a corkscrew roller coaster, the Fearfall, go-carts and cinema 180.
The 8000 hectares of flora and fauna in the Waitakere Ranges offer 200km of walking and hiking track suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Experience the ultimate Auckland activity in the City of Sails by joining the crew of one of two authentic 1995 America's Cup yachts for an exciting match race.
Step back into the past at Howick Historical Village - a living museum, depicting life in 19th century New Zealand through a hands on and interactive programme.
Auckland's population is approximately 1.3 million, making it by far the largest city in New Zealand, with one third of the country's entire population. The climate is temperate, with warm summers (averaging over 24 degrees) and cooler winters (averaging 16 degrees). The summer months are between December and March.
