The North Island region


Aucklanders living on the edge of the Hauraki Gulf have a strong association with the sea. Boating and yachting in particular are popular sports with the locals. Many a world famous yachtsman has grown up in this incredible region that was home to the Americas Cup 1995 - 2003.
Just 20 minutes drive north from downtown Auckland is the amazing Whangaparaoa Peninsula. This narrow peninsula projects out into the Hauraki Gulf and offers a huge variety of Picturesque scenery and recreational opportunities. The peninsula has several local shopping centres including the new Whangaparaoa Pacific Plaza.
The coastline is made up of interesting rocky and cliff areas separating the many fabulous safe, sandy beaches. When combined with large reserves and wilderness areas the peninsula is a haven for a healthy lifestyle or vacation.

*Manly Beach and village*
Attractive and popular Manly Beach offers superb, safe swimming, picnicking, boating and water sports. Manly village has a variety of shops and many restaurants providing the finest cuisine in a pleasant village atmosphere.
*Tiritiri Matangi Island*
This unique native bird sanctuary and scientific reserve lies 4km off the top of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and is accessible by ferry four days a week. The island is an exciting and successful conservation project, home to vast numbers of native birds and plants. There are numerous walks on the island including one to the historic light house built in 1864, still functioning and open to the public.
*Stanmore Bay*
Adjacent to the beach is a magnificent indoor leisure and fitness centre. Included are facilities for swimming badminton, squash, basketball, fitness gym and many more. The long sandy beach is popular for many water sports and home to the local boating club.
