The Limousin / Auvergne / Creuse region
La Creuse is known as The Lake District of France, and it's easy to see why - lakes, rivers and streams water the lush, hilly landscape which has changed little over the last hundred years. It never seems busy here, remaining quiet even during the tourist months. Farming is the main occupation; there is virtually no industry, and very few cars on the roads away from the motorway, so pollution is negligible - tap water is spring fed and is probably the cleanest in France. We enjoy one of the best micro-climates in Europe which encourages a wonderful range of birds and wildlife. Red squirrels, deer, buzzards and red kites share the landscape, where there are more cows (the famous Limousin cattle) than humans and sometimes more tractors than cars!
The stonemasons of La Creuse built Paris with stone brought from this area - the tradition of building from stone is evident everywhere and contributes to the timeless feel of this beautiful, little known corner of France.
If you are looking for aqua parks, themed pubs and crowds then La Creuse is not the place for you - but if you want to unwind, experience the charm of rural French life and take things at a slower, gentler pace then look no further.
Aubusson, Creuse area
The village of Mainsat with its baker, butcher, post office, restaurant and well stocked mini-market is a ten minute drive along quiet, country lanes. The small town of Auzances is twenty minutes away and offers a wider range of facilities, including a large supermarket. Aubusson, the home of tapestry, is half an hour's drive; here you will find a good range of eating places, shops and two large, well stocked supermarkets.
There are some pretty swimming lakes nearby; the nearest is a ten minute drive and offers a small beach, open air restaurant in season, and a music festival catering for all tastes during August.. FISHING is available locally in a range of lakes including a freshly stocked lake in nearby Mainsat (trout and carp, daily permits €5). SKIING at Mont d'Or (predominately green and blue runs, extremely reasonable day passes) is 1hour 15 minutes' drive; Besse and Super Besse are a little further. Nearby local markets, chateaux such as the Chateaux Villemonteix near Chenerailles, and Eiffel's famous and impressive viaduct at Busseau sur Creuse are all worth a visit.
Limoges porcelain is world famous - you can visit the factory in the city - and the town of Oradour, preserved as it was left when it was razed during the Second World War, is a sombre and moving monument to those who died.
You'll find maps and lots of useful information available in the gite, and the owners are more than happy to advise you to help you make the most of your stay in this hidden, largely undiscovered gem in The Limousin.
