The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

This region is blessed with a microclimate ensuring a high probability of hot sunny days during the summer. It enjoys almost as much sunshine as the south of France. With nearly 100 miles of excellent sandy beaches backed by pine forests within easy reach, plus easy access from the southern channel ports, it is a popular destination for British holidaymakers seeking a sun, sea and sand holiday.
However there is much more to this area than beaches including fortified cities, islands, wetlands and vineyards. Angouleme, the capital is only 42km to the north and is worth a visit for it's Romanesque architecture and excellent restaurants.
Chalais our local market town, which holds it's market day every Monday ,also boasts an excellent restaurant in it's old chateau.
It is worth travelling inland from the coast to see agricultural France at its best as well as some highly rated theme parks such as Puy du Fou and Futuroscope.
The Aubeterre sur Dronne / Pillac area
Aubeterre is approx. 6 kms. from "La Grange Maranol" and is rated as one of the most beautiful towns in the region - a haven for artists!! It's market is held on Sunday mornings and features local arts, crafts and produce. It also has a puppet show for children and adults alike, but booking is essential. Much of the town is pre-Roman, in particular the Eglise Monolithe, an ancient place of worship in a gigantic cave. There are many restuarant and cafes, many of which are in a beautiful shady square - just the place to while away the afternoon with a coffee or aperitif!! The town is situated on the river Dronne, which has an excellent safe river beach and is excellent for young children. Canoeing and tennis are also available.
Further afield at Lac Jemaye, a half hour's drive away lies another lovely swimming and bathing lake which has been extensively developed recently with restuarants, children's play area's and a nature trail. This is an extremely good place to spend the day, having a picnic under the pine trees.
We are lucky to be situated about 2kms from a nine hole British owned golf course, one of the few in the area. There is also tennis and a bar.
The nearest supermarket is in the nearby town of St. Severin which also has bars and restaurants. Larger supermarkets are in Montmoreau (10mins), Chalais (15mins) and Riberac (20mins)
There are many pleasant walks in the woods adjacent to the barn which are a haven to many varieties of birds and animals, including deer.
Some of the oldest caves with cave paintings in the world are situated about 90mins to the south, in the Dorgogne region close to the ancient town of Perigueux

Guestbook for La Grange Maranol
Brilliant, very spacious and well appointed accommodation. Very friendly owner and family. Mr and Mrs C. Ridbge.
Fabulous accommodation, very spacious and well equipped. All our requests willingly and happily accomodated. Bikes, maps and baby equipment greatly appreciated. Mr and Mrs S Gavin and family
The attention to detail is obvious and all facilities including beds and kitchen are excellent. We all had a wonderful stay and thank you very much for your hospitality. We cannot think of any improvements which would
make our stay more comfortable or enjoyable. Sharples and Tyrell families.
This is great spacious accommodation with wonderful kitchen and living space. Well equipped and we enjoyed the flexibility of so many different dining spaces, inside and out. Very hard to find fault. Thank you for a lovely relaxing 2 weeks away in this beautiful part of France. Wish we could stay longer. Mr. and Mrs. Gough.
Thank you for a lovely fortnight in your home, it really was like a "home from home". We had everything we could possibly need (except perhaps sometimes - the weather). Thanks again. S. McKenzie.
P. S. Grace loved playing with Katie.
We had a lovely relaxed and comfortable time. The place has almost everything we need. The only possible improvement we can think of would be a large plastic jug in the kitchen for making up drinks. Thanks, Lynda, Mark, Isabella and Amelia Chambers.
