About this location

The Poitou-Charentes region

The Poitou Charentes region is almost completely unspoilt with virtually no industry and is one of the most tranquil in France. Its long Atlantic coastline is noted for long sandy beaches, marinas, golf courses, and islands. Two popular large islands, the Ile de Ré and the Ile d'Oléron have been joined by bridges to the mainland.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne

Conveniently situated on the border of the “South” Charente and the Dordogne, Aubeterre sur Dronne boasts an exceptional cultural heritage which, combined with its beautiful natural surroundings and the famous French “art de vivre”, makes it the perfect place to live and visit.

Officially listed as one of « The Most Beautiful Villages in France» since 1993, it has welcomed pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostella in north west Spain, visitors and tourists for over 1000 years. Two important historical monuments add to the cultural status of Aubeterre sur Dronne; the extraordinary, monolithic, underground Church of St Jean and the Romanesque Church of St Jacques, with its stunning façade.

Visitors and tourists can enjoy meandering through the ups and downs of the narrow streets, popping in to admire the many specialist shops, including a leather worker and potters, and then settling down in the village square, Place Trarieux, at one of the cafés or restaurants, comfortably shaded by ancient lime trees..

.

For the energetic visitor there are activities aplenty. Aubeterre sur Dronne has been designated a “Station Verte” for over 25 years. At the foot of the village, where the meadows meet the River Dronne, are to be found a river beach and restaurant, the municipal three star campsite, a canoeing centre, the football club, and the village's very active tennis club.(http://aubeterresurdronne.com/pages/en/home.php?lang=EN)

"Fun filled holiday"

We drove and took the route calais to Rouen and when I arrived at the village of Aubeterre it was bustling with people as it was the local market day and all the quaint little shops were open which was nice to see.
On arrival at the house my first impression was it was very spacious and nice and clean. We were amazed at how the house was built into the rocks and how quirky it was.
The rooms were all big and airy with plenty of space to relax. Every thing was on the door step a pharmacy, local super market, the man made beach and places to eat out without driving.
During the holiday me and my friends hired canoes which were great fun!!!
:-) and only a five minute walk to the river from the house. We also went horse riding and bike riding which were all on the door step again and reasonably priced.Loved the Market at Riberac (Friday mornings) fab for a bargain and lots to see.
The man made beach was also great as there were tennis courts down at the beach, volley ball and places to eat so plenty to do for everyone!
overall I would recommend this holiday let, for groups of friends, couples or families and would even consider going again as i thoroughly enjoyed it :-)
