Out and about
There is a swimming pool at Chalais (open air) and river beaches at Aubeterre, St Aulaye and Parcoul. Canoes are available to hire at Aubeterre and Parcoul. There is also a water park at Parcoul with a boating lake, cafe and water slides.
15 minutes drive away is the Country Club, Manior de Longeveau, with a 9 hole golf course where you are welcome to play (daily green fees are payable at the bar). Tennis is also available out of season. During the summer they run a number of events from Jazz evenings and BBQs, all are open to non residents who are most welcome, there is a bar on there terrace open most day and serve snacks .
At Aubeterre, one of the prettiest villages in France (10 minutes) there is canoeing on the River Dronne. The village has a number of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. Every Sunday there is a very small market in the square, a few wine producers set up their stalls and you can try before you buy.
The small town of Chalais is 5 minutes away, where you can find all the services that you need, a modern supermarket, a Boulangerie, Maison de Presse, Bank, Petrol and even a take away Pizza! The town is overlooked by a large Chateau sitting on a hill which hosts a number of exhibitions during the year and has one of the finest restaurants in the area. Every Monday the largest market in the area takes over the whole town and everything buzzes for the morning, for the rest of the week the place is quiet.
A little further afield are the towns of Riberac (30 minutes), the largest market town in the Dordogne (every Friday), St Emillion (45 minutes) with its wine shops.
Angouleme the capital of the Charente is 35 minutes to the north and has a TGV link to Paris and Lille (about 2hours 30 minutes). The city has many shops and an old quarter full of restaurants. On the out skirts of the city are the larger stores including an enormous hypermarket.
There are plenty of local Restaurants to choose from in the area, and they cater for most tastes, from the Chateau in Chalais to the local village restaurants.
The Aubeterre sur Dronne / Poitou area
Plenty of local restaurants to choose from in the area, and they cater for most tastes. We are lucky enough to have 3 of the finest restaurants in the area within a short drive. The restaurant at the Chateau which dominates the little town of Chalais has now become very popular and offers excellent value. The Hotel de France in Riberac is full of character and is good value and in Aubeterre the Hostillerie du Perigord serves local produce of the highest standard.
The choice is wide - from traditional French restaurants with long tables and a set menu, to Pizzas and Crepes - and plenty of places offering children's menus.
If you stay for 2 weeks and eat out everynight - you still would not have visited them all!
Visiting the vineyards
Le Logis is in the area of France where Cognac is produced (the Fin Bois area), but the main production area is now based around the town of Cognac about 60 minutes to the north.
There are a number of houses to visit including Hennessy and Martells, which have organised tours. In some of the local villages Cognac is produced and there are a number of vineyards where you can taste and buy.
One of the best is only 10 minutes away in the village of Bors. The local drink is Pineau which is a blend of grape juice and Cognac and is drunk chilled, most Cognac estates produce Pineau. A dry white wine is also available and some of the Cognac estates have a sparkling wine, which is matured in the hills at Angouleme.
Bordeaux is less than 90 minutes away and to drive there you go through Libourne (45 minutes) and some of the well known vineyards of Pomerol and Lalande de Pomerol. Fronsac is about 1hour. St Emillion, the medieval hill top village is full of shops selling the local claret and certainly worth a visit, and only a 45 minutes drive.
Bergerac (white, rose and red wines) is just over 1 hour away, and to the south of the town is Monbazillac where the sweet dessert wines come from. There is a large modern tasting centre by the Chateau where you can sample about 12 wines, and buy if you wish. Some of the vineyards also produce a dry white wine as well.
