LOCATION! LOCATION! L'Hirondelle is a brand new contemporary designed holiday cottage in an elevated position, commanding stunning panoramic views of the Charente and Dordogne. It has the advantage of having its friendly owners on site for all those important questions. However, they will of course respect your need for privacy.

The property is set in beautiful rural countryside within a 5 minute drive or a 15 minute walk from Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, voted one of the prettiest villages in France. Besides enjoying the beautiful village centre with its quaint streets, terracotta roofs, Roman architecture, cafés, restaurants, markets and shops, you'll be able to participate in many local popular activities such as canoeing, swimming, walking, cycling, fishing, tennis, golf and horse riding. On the other hand, if all this activity is not for you and you are looking for a more relaxing, peaceful time, why not take advantage of the region's well known sunshine by soaking up some rays on the terrace or poolside with a long cool drink. The fabulous 10m x 5m swimming pool, shared with the owners, could almost be described as an 'infinity' type since its elevated position overlooks the local countryside. Here you'll find loungers, umbrellas and the usual aquatic toys!

LOCAL AREA INFORMATION, ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

L'Hirondelle is ideally situated in the Charente close to the Dordogne border which allows easy access to many of region's well known and popular places of interest. The beautiful city of Bordeaux with its mix of old and contemporary architecture is served by arguably Europe's finest tram network. Shopping and walking is a pleasure with all the usual big name stores just a stone's throw away from the magnificent Gironde river.

One cannot mention Bordeaux without referring to the one thing that is synonymous with this area of France....fine wines! One only has to drive a few kilometres out of Bordeaux to see acres of vineyards and enjoy superb wines that emmanate from famous towns, chateaux or communities. Such names as the Medoc, St Julien, Margaux and Pauillac on the left bank of the Gironde compete with the likes of St Emilion, Pomerol and Cotes de Blaye on the right bank. You will be treated to some very special memories should you visit any of these areas.

Interestingly, Aubeterre and neighbouring villages are rich with history extending back to Romano-Gallic times. In addition there are many 'Bastide' towns particularly in adjacent Aquitaine, where the English once had a strong foothold. These towns played an important defensive role particularly against the seige tactics of Edward III and the Black Prince during the 100 years war.

On a lighter note, one must try and visit the local markets with fresh vegetables and fruit in Chalais, St Aulaye, Ribérac and Aubeterre, places of colour and traditional dress.

The gourmets and lovers of fine food amongst you, will not be disappointed. Local cafés and restaurants in Aubeterre, Chalais, St Aulaye and Bonnes are recognised amongst some of the finest in SW France attracting top chefs such as Michel Guerard and Helene Darroze. Local favourite dishes based on duck such as foie gras and confit de canard are very popular.

It's also worth visiting Cognac, about an hour's drive away. Here the town centre is quaint, memorable and traditionally French. Then there is Périgueux (1 hour), the Dordogne's capital city, with its excellent shopping facilities, an amazing Byzantine cathedral and markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Another place to consider is the pretty town of Brantôme, known as the 'Little Venice in the Périgord' on account of its position on an island in the river Dronne.

Aubeterre sur Dronne

L'Hirondelle is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with south-facing views over farmland and a few farm buildings. Here you will enjoy peace and tranquility as you can 'get away from it all', yet it's not far away from some action such as canoeing, tennis, golf, horse riding, etc for those of a more energetic nature. Small villages, typical of the area, offer restaurants, markets and shops and are not far away. The river Dronne in Aubeterre and St Aulaye offer beaches and river-side activities. Bicycles hire can be arranged for those who want to explore on two wheels. Plenty to explore, plenty to see ... at a leisurely pace. Don't want to go out? Well, then take it easy by the beautiful new pool or on the patio ... you can be as laid back as you wish!
