About the home

La Désirade is a self-catering guesthouse situated on the south-eastern coast of the island of Mahé. It is made up of 3 waterfront, ocean-facing studio apartments, each capable of hosting 2 adults and 1 or 2 children. Each air-conditioned apartment has a fully-equipped kitchenette and bathroom with hot/cold shower. We offer a daily chambermaid service and laundry facilities. The rooms have direct telephone lines, WIFI internet and television. Since La Désirade is self catering, we do not offer any meals. However, there are 2 restaurants within walking distance and 2 shops close by, where you can buy your groceries.

The Mahe region

Mahe is the main island of the Seychelles. This is where all services are located and where about 80% of the population live. The capital Victoria is located here and so is the main port and airport.

Mahe has some of the best beaches in the Indian ocean and of course the mountains are simply some of the lushest in the world. This is the most significant mid ocean granitic island, so expect a wide range of endemic flora and fauna here.

The sea surrounding Mahe offers some of the best dive sites in the Indian Ocean and there are many world class dive and fishing operations based on Mahe.

You will find the products of a flourishing local craftsmanship in the shops in Victoria and at the Artisan Village of Anse aux Pins: handbags, hats and palm-leaf baskets, objects made from coconut shells, seashell jewelry, and cosmetics derive from coconuts. At the market in Victoria, moreover, you can buy numerous spices and coco oil. While the boutiques offer you hand-printed cloths (batik), finely inlaid boxes and many other things. The shops are open from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. from Monday to Friday and from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon on Saturdays. Some shops are also open on Sunday mornings.
Transport

Car hire. The best way of visiting the island of Mahe is to hire a car. All you need is an official driving license of your own country. There is a speed limit of 45 km/h in inhabited centres and you have to drive on the left.
Public transport. A scheduled bus service is available at Mahe and Praslin between 5.30 a.m. and 7.00 p.m. (Attention: the service is reduced on Sundays!).

The Au Cap / Pointe Au Sel area

The stretch of beach in front of La Desiarde on the south-eastern coast of Mahé, is protected by a coral reef and therefor makes for safe swimming and snorkelling even for the very young.

The next best area for snorkelling is Anse Royale which is a few minutes away on foot or by car and the small island just off the coast, provides an ideal habitat for all the marine life.

One must always bear in mind that currents can be deceptively strong, and so it is not advisable to swim out too far or too close to the reef.
