The Mahe region
Covering an area of 152 Square kilometers, MAHE is the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago. Rising to a height of 905 meters above sea level at its highest point, it stretches 27 kilometres from north to south. And at its widest it is 8 kilometres across.
MAHE is one of the most beautiful islands (certainly one of the most remote) in the world. With its high inland mountains counter posing its sixty-eight glistening white palm fringed beaches, MAHE is indeed an island of abundance, and of surprise and discovery around every bend in the trail, with its many striking contrasts of landscape and natural.
Yet in many ways, MAHE is the most spectacular of all the islands. It has the highest peaks, covered in lush vegetation, where two of the granite islands’ unique bird species find their home.
Most of Seychelles’ unique plants are found on MAHE, some of them nowhere else in the world, and there are beautiful beaches, mountain walks, marine parks, the most advanced facilities for water sports and diving and much more.
The main island of Seychelles and by far the largest centre of business and commerce, it is home to the vast majority of the country’s people. All import and exports by sea pass through Port Victoria and all international flights arrive and depart from Seychelles International Airport at Anse Dejeuner. Wherever you come from, you will arrive at MAHE.
The island is well served by a network of good roads that circle and crisscross the island, although fortunately many areas are approached only by dirt trails or footpaths. It means you can discover MAHE either by car or on foot.
Most people visit MAHE for the beaches in particular but even beaches can pall in between water sports and sunbathing you have the option of visiting unspoilt villages to meet the Seychellois in their own environment, study the distinctive architecture, plantations, churches, and local art and handicraft centres such as the pottery and the artists, ateliers among the palm trees.
There are many beaches small or large, deserted or crowded, highly visible or hidden away in some little known part of the island.
The Au Cap / Pointe Au Sel area
The stretch of small rock-fringed coves along the coast of Anse Royale on the south-eastern coast of Mahé, from the area known as Fairyland down to the Anglican church at Anse Royale, is an enchanting place for swimming and snorkelling.
The best areas for snorkelling are around the rocks at Fairyland and up to the small island just off the coast, where there are myriad brightly coloured coral fish. The water here is enclosed behind a reef, which keeps out the larger fish and is fairly shallow.
Currents can be deceptively strong, thus it is unadvisable to swim out too far. This stretch of coast is best enjoyed during the north-west trade winds when the water is translucent, balmy and tranquil.

Sabrina Pool...well what can i say, she is the perfect and attention to detail host! the house is very comfortable, clean and well supplied with all the things you need and more..Sabrina is always on hand to offer her help and even took us out for trip around her part of the island, this really made a difference to our stay as we were able to see things that would have passed us buy. We did not hire a car on this trip, but sabrina can even help there, so very considerate of her to take us out for the day. I only have positive things to say...her husband Jo-jo even caught us a red-snapper and along with his family prepared a bbq for us and it was nice to be able to realx and share this meal....we came to the Seychelles for a wedding on Cerf island, my nephew , staying in BeauVallon the first part and then Pointe de sel so it was great. The beach we used daily ( husband son-26, and sister) was Anse royale it was a short bus ride from Sabrinas, even though she would always offer a lift...and it was a nice way to spend the day, having done so much the week before it was just perfect. I think Sabrina is a natural when it comes to letting, she has that little bit extra and it shines through...enjoy!! you would nt be dissapointed. Oh forgot yo mention on arrival as they have their own veg farm we were greeted with lovely freshly picked veg and salad, a fridge full of basic essential what more could one ask for..... |

Our stay at Fran´s Holiday Cottage was wonderful. I do really recommend it to all kind of people: families with kids, couples, friends... The house is recently renovated and has everything that you may need: kitchen completely full equipped, dining room with TV, one complete Bathroom, two beautiful bedrooms with AC and a nice veranda outside. If you rent a car, there is parking possibility. There is also a nice beach quite near the house, Anse Royale. Don´t miss it! The owner, Sabrina, is a kindly person who is really interested in your comfortably stay in the island and help you in all the things you may need: for example, she picked us up at the airport the first day, she drove us to Victoria to take the ferry to the other islands, she provided us the first day with the basic food to eat…I cannot say anything more than “Thanks a lot, Sabrina!! You made our stay in Mahe perfect and we do really think about coming back to Mahe and stay with you again”. We really felt like “at home” at Fran Cottage. Spain, November 2011 |
