Home description
On the first floor and sharing a shower room, are one twin and one double bedroom with sloping beamed ceilings and large French windows looking out over the square towards the sea. Downstairs on one side of a small entrance hall, is a neat, well-equipped kitchen with attractive pine cupboards and dining table. Also off the entrance hall is a second shower room, plus the atmospheric living room built around the natural rock face and complete with a lovely open fireplace, fitted sofas and a pine ceiling.
Outside the spacious terrace, neatly paved in local stone, is partly covered and in summer becomes a cool extension of the living area. A screen of pink and white oleanders provide a high degree of privacy from the neighbouring cottage as well as welcoming shade in the afternoon. A great spot to sit with a cold drink and watch the world go by, such as it is!
In a sheltered spot to the far side of the house is a small kitchen garden and also a barbecue.

The Attica region
Fringed by long sandy beaches, rocky coves and towering cliffs, the surprisingly green but frequently rugged scenery is splashed with patches of wild flowers. Crete is haphazardly scattered with Minoan palaces, mosques and minarets of Venetian and Turkish conquerors. For all that, lingering longest in the memory, will be the hospitality of its people who understand the real meaning of filoxenia, the Greek word for 'love of strangers', still a way of life in rural Crete. Here is a land for all temperaments, blending fascinating layers of history with a proud and thriving folklore in a powerfully beautiful setting. Hidden away on the south coast between Agia Galini and Moni Preveli and a good 2 half hours drive from Chania Airport, the tiny hamlet of Agia Paraskevi, stands high on the hillside looking out over the Lybian Sea. Virtually abandoned for 25 years, the village has over the past decade been slowly restored and brought back to life and now provides the setting for a unique holiday experience and the ultimate place to unwind!
Athens / Agia Paraskevi area
Ag Pag as we affectionately call it has two churches and a dozen houses, dotted haphazardly over a wide area of the hillside demarcated by rocky bluffs and olive groves sloping downwards towards the sea. All the houses are built in traditional style from local stone and wood, with terracotta tiled roofs, but all are different shapes and sizes and have their own particular character, based on the lie of the land and the vision of their individual owners!
Apart from the very occasional passing car, Ag Pag is amazingly peaceful and by day you can clearly hear the tinkling of goat bells on the hillside a kilometre away. By night it’s even quieter and the sound of silence is almost tangible, save for the occasional soft hoot of a Skops Owl, or the distant murmur of the sea breaking on Ligres beach, 2km away down the hill. With no large villages let alone towns nearby, the sky at night is a further revelation with a vast and dazzling canopy of stars, seemingly close enough to touch, like baubles on a cosmic Christmas Tree.
Finally, it is important to appreciate that Ag Pag is not a new, purpose built holiday village, but a wonderful old village, that has been restored to life by the enthusiasm and dedication of some of its’ younger sons and now acts like a magnet to all whose lives it has previously touched. Nikos for example has poignant childhood memories of the village and having recentlly retired from the navy, is content to return to the simple life of his youth and run the small cafenion cum mini-market on the village square. The mini-market stocks basic day to day groceries whilst the cafenion serve drinks and simple snacks, so do please stoop by for a coffee and a quiet game of backgammon or just to pass the time of day with Nikos who speaks some English and as an old seafarer has many a tale to tell.... another reason champion of Ag Pags renaissance is Kyriakos who last year out of the blue returned from the island of Ios together with his wife and young son and then proceeded to build a taverna with a few rooms and a swimming pool just below the village. Kyriakos who speaks good English, is quietly spoken but with a hugely infectious laugh, he's a real man of the popel and loves company so all our customers will be made very welcome. Incidentally, Stella our cleaner in Ag Pag will also be cooking for Kyriakos so clients from previous years can expect the same good food with the bonus of swimming pool.
Local Information: The sandy Ligres beach with its’ own small taverna, is just 5 minutes drive away whilst a 10 minute drive will bring you to an excellent fish taverna on the little harbour in Agia Fotini. 20 minutes west of Agia Fotini, the unsurfaced road follows the coast to Swallows Canyon where a palm fringed fresh water lagoon backs the sany beach below the spectacular hilltop monastery of Moni Preveli. 10-15 minutes drive beyond Ligres beach to the east, are the superb beaches of Trio Petra and Agios Pavlos. All the beaches on this stretch of the south coast are sandy and relatively quiet even in high season, with a good half dozen strategically placed tavernas. For banks, shops and a little more civilisation, the hill town of Spili, with its’ handsome Venetian fountains, is a good 40 minutes drive. N.B. Car hire is obviously essential and although every year theare an increasing number of roads hiring a 4-wheel drive vehicle gives you the exhilarating option to explore the myriad tiny roads off the beaten track!
Walking - In spring and autumn the area is excellent for walkers and there are footpaths to Ligres and Trio Petra beaches and also to Agia Fotini and even distant Moni Prevelli, further information available locally with estimates of times and distances.

Guestbook
Emilio's House and Agia Paraskevi was the perfect place for us to relax. The house is well laid out and has everything you need for cooking. I loved having the sheets changed twice a week! We spent most of our time locally, the local beaches are beautiful and quiet. All the local tavernas we went to were very good. Being able to use the lovely pool at Pegasus is great should you ever tire of the beaches. If you're after seclusion and peace in Crete you'll find it at Agia Paraskevi. Sarah, Aug 2007 We thought that Manoli's house was an excellent base for a fantastic holiday. The creation of new paved ( but twisting) roads to Triopetra gives access to a range of beautiful and deserted beaches. We were really annoyed to find one morning that another couple were on "our" stretch of beach just east of Ligres !! We will certainly return. David and Carrie Richardson, Jul 2007 What a wonderful place! We hope to return and revisit some of our favourite bits including....... Agia Fontini: freindly Taverna and good snorkelling Aponaema Taverna(west of Triopetra) very good food and company Lounging about here at the house : always a sheltered spot somewhere - despite strong winds. Highlights certainly included exploring the coast by 4 x 4, the peaceful atmosphere both in the village and on the miles of beaches and gazing at the Milky Way each night. However be warned - spent too much time gazing at the stars on our way back from an evening in Triopetra and ended up half way up the mountain! Have a wonderful time, I wish we could stay another week!! The Roberts, Sep 2005
