The North West Italy / Piedmont/Lake Maggiore region
Northwest Italy includes the three major cities of Turin in Piedmont, Milan in Lombardy & Genoa in Liguria. The area is blessed with the sunny beaches of the Italian Riviera in the south and the refreshing heights of the Italian Alps along the French and Swiss borders in the west & north and the Lakes Region to the northeast... and in between all this lie the lush vineyard covere-hills of the Monferrato & the Langhe. Like the rest of Italy, the area has a long and intricate history - from the Roman Empire, to more recent times when the French Savoy family ruled Turin, the Austrians held sway in Milan and the Moors held regular raiding parties into Genoa. After Gen. Garibaldi succeeded in uniting the Italian peninsula in the mid-1800s, Turin became Italy's first capital (later moved to Florence and then Rome after the Vatican finally accepted that Italy was now a country and not just a collection of city states). Traces of all these cultures can still be found in the area today in its art & architecture, its magnificent castles, ancient ruins, historic cathedrals, churches & abbies and unique cuisine.
Turin, also known as "The Capital of the Alps", was the city-host of the 2006 Winter Olympics due to its close proximity to so many developed sites for winter sports. It has stunning architecture representing most every style and period and has many world-class museums - including a huge Egyptian Museum (thanks to the Savoys and Napolean) which boasts the world's largest collection outside of Egypt itself. The "Shroud of Turin", which many believe actually wrapped Christ's body after crucifixion is also housed here.
Apart from its famous designer shopping, you'll want to make a day-trip to Milan to visit the towering white-marbel "Duomo" cathedral, the glass-covered and marble-tiled "Galleria" (said to be the world's oldest shopping mall) and, of course "La Scala", one of Europe's most beautiful opera houses. Genoa retains its old-world charm and a day combing its backs streets and piazzas (not to mention the seafood!) is a must. It also has Europes largest aquarium right on the waterfront which people of all ages find facinating.
Asti / Monferrato area
The Monferratto and neighbouring Langhe will provide you with an unforgettable experience. After you've had enough of big cities, museums and churches, you'll really appreciate this lush, slow-paced land of acre after acre of vineyard-covered hills.
You can go cellar-hopping by car or explore this enchanting land via the vast network of trails and back roads on foot, bike or horseback. The two nearby cities of Asti and Alba both host internationally acclaimed wine, food and truffle festivals in early autumn and of course there's Italy's oldest "Palio" (bareback horserace) held in Asti every September. Other towns in the area host ballets, outdoor concerts (many are free) and castle tours during the summer months.
How to get there
Nearest international airport is Turin Caselle (45 minutes by car), but more budget flights go to Milan's two airports, Linate & Malpensa (one and a half hours by car) - All three airports have car hire offices. Also accessible via the high speed train through France. The nearest high-speed station is in Vercelli (30 minutes by car).

Guestbook for Villa Due Valli
"We stayed in the "terrazza" apartment right after they opened for business, so we were the only ones there. Ken & Belinda treated us like family and were spot on about what to see and where to eat out. Great holiday in a wonderful place! " Charles & Susan Schwartz - Oakland, California.
"After a long rainy winter in England I was anxious to get away. I chose the Monferrato because I'm a wine buff. Found Villa Due Valli on the internet and I'm glad I did! Ken introduced me to all of his wine-making friends, so I was in enological heaven!" Oliver St. John - London.
"My wife and I stayed at the villa for a short Easter get-away with our two daughters. The area is enchanting and the apartment and special attention superb... can't remember a more relaxing holiday. Beppe Severino - Ivrea, Italy
