The North West Italy / Piedmont/Lake Maggiore region

In contrast to many other Italian regions, Piemonte has retained a genuine rural culture. The local areas of Monferrato and Langhe are full of fantastic vineyards, stunning countryside, and beautiful little medieval hilltop villages, most crowned by splendid castles, a reminder of the days when Piemonte was the direct route of armies marching between Italy and France. Its territory is mainly hilly, beeing consistuted from undulates reliefs, and producing famous wines (Barbera, Gringnolino, Moscato and so on).
The rich heritage of its long history is evident in every village and town, where visitors can discover the art of architecture of successive historic eras. Architectural gems are scattered throughout the countryside.
A treasure trore of attractions to satisfy even the most demanding tourist.
Here you can sample local farm products and savour the wounders of traditional Piemontese cooking, complemented by excellent DOC wines produced in this area and meet the people of Piedmont whose outward reserve is blied by the unfailing warmth of their ospitality, unchainged over the centuries.

Asti / Fontanile area

"Contessa Chiara" is centrally located for a wide range on non-wine related day trips. Take your pick from shopping (antique markets, or the designer shops of Milan and Turin), history, culture, beauty, sea, mountains, lakes and sports. we have the alps for excellent hiking, the Ligurian Riviera with the famous resorts of Camogli and Portofino for seaside pleasures, the beautiful italian lakes and many local festivals full of pageantry, colour and history.
There is a famous verse in Carducci’s poetry about the exalted soil of Aleramo with its castle and vines - l’esultante di castella e vigne suol d’Aleramo -. These few words sum up the Monferrato, a historical and geographical area in Asti Province. Though the smallest in Piedmont, this province is one of the richest on the level of its wines and foods. It is an area of sweet rolling hills that are often embellished with villages, castles, and bell towers. To all this we can add its enormous patrimony of multicoloured vineyards that create an unequalled panorama. This spectacle of colours transforms itself from season to season in its different tones. This is “wine country” that is already known of the world over. It is here that spumanti brut is produced. Here in Canelli is where Italian spumante and Asti Spumante were invented. Asti produces light red wines and more full-bodied reds for aging. There are also white wines and distilled spirits, especially various types of grappa. In this fertile soil a number of crops grow. There are white truffles, red and yellow quadrato d’Asti or “Asti square” peppers as well as white, crunchy cardoons, the so-called “hunchback thistle.” Asti’s wines and characteristic products blend into the tastes of local dishes when used in the artful traditional cuisine. These include carne cruda battuta al coltello (thin strips of raw meat), tonno di coniglio (rabbit with tuna sauce), risotto al barbera (rice cooked in red wine), bagna cauda (an anchovy-based sauce used as a dip for raw and cooked vegetables), bollito reale (boiled meat), and, naturally, many deserts, especially the liqueur-flavoured amaretti di Mombaruzzo. The Asti area has a good number of those castles that Carducci wrote about. There are castles at Piea and San Martino Alfieri with its splendid nineteenth-century construction. There are the castle in Castell’Alfero and Montiglio. The Costigliole castle was once the residence of the Countess of Castiglione, but is now the home of an international school of Italian cooking and of the Cultural Park of the Grinzane Cavour Award. The Cisterna castle houses the Museo di Arti e Mestieri di un Tempo, a traditional crafts museum that reconstructs workshops and activities that are now in disuse.

Dear Petra,

My English is much too poor to thank you as you deserve it.
Nothing could have been more perfect than your wonderful villa for our company seminar. The 12 of us were absolutely happy with your welcome, your hospitability, your availability at all times (from early in the morning till late at night, sometimes almost round the clock...). The nice rooms, refreshing swimming pool, big garden have all witnessed our entire satisfaction!
We were delighted by your delicious Italian cooking, always accompanied by excellent wines. And, last but not least, your grappa was always there at the right time!

We all wish to thank you very much for this nice stay we won't forget!

Kinds regards,

Deli XL Team

Dear Petra,

This has really been an exeptional week for us all to remember. With the warmest welcoming and everything to make us feel home.
We all enjoyed the magnificient tenniscourt. Also the perfect pool with the poolhouse and the sauna offcourse, which made our finnish midsummer "juhannus" perfect with the "vinta" of birchtree.
Petra, you are an incredible host, made us feel the best guests ever.
Looking forward to meet you again and longing for the excellent care that Perla took of us.
See you soon!

Dearest Petra,
Well - isn't incredible what comes from the Christmas gift of a cookbook called "autumn in Piedmont"?!! This is how we discovered "Contessa Chiara"...but really we discovered "Contessa Petra"!
You showed us great warmth, an international approach to hospitality -shared your lovely son Matteo, your soft and cool garden, your Italian "grace de table", and were unfailingly generous.
We will back for "an Autumn in Piedmont" and look forward to sharing any more meals, good conversations and time in the kitchen and table.
Kerry G., Andrew M., Lilly and LouisM. - Australia June 2008

Perla & Petra,

This is the first house of 7 we have stayed in over the last 5 years, where we would all gladly return.
Thank you for giving us a big piece of Paradise, we will treasure our memories of "Contessa Chiara" always.
