The Umbria region
Umbria's central location make it a natural choice for a home base when visiting Italy. A reliable rail and bus system quickly and economically gets you around to see all of the major sights. Quieter, and less overrun than neighbouring Tuscany, Umbria is also an enjoyable place to tour with a car. Its relaxed pace make it a wonderful place to visit with a family, or for a couple or individual looking to relax
Umbria enjoys a relatively mild climate year round. Some cold and rain in the Winter, glorious Springs, and warm pleasant Summers. Fall is truffle and mushroom season. It is a region that enjoys world class art and culture and breathtaking nature. The Falls of the Marmore are the highest in Italy, and in the 1700 were one of the major stopping points for artists on the Grand Tour. In addition to a rich history of Etruscan, Roman and Medieval art , contemporary art and music thrive today with the famous Perugia Jazz and Spoleto festivals.
Assisi area
Assisi is arguably the most famous town in Umbria thanks to its patron Saint Francis. While Assisi is in itself a medieval hilltop town with a small village's charm, it also holds a prominent position on the international stage. Assisi attracts religious pilgrims and spiritual leaders from all over the world, as well as artists, writers and academics interested in its rich artistic and historic patrimony. It is also great place to relax and have fun. Family friendly restaurants, streets and squares that kids can run around in by themselves, great shopping - it is a place that has something for all ages.
Assisi is a small town where kids can run around safely and meet other children. Let them teach you where the best gelato is! The main square is just footsteps from the apartment. Excellent range of quality, family friendly restaurants all a short stroll from the apartment. Our favourite grocery store delivers for free. Paola, our housekeeper, is also willing to cook and run errands for you for an extra fee. Enjoy the local shopping: olive oil, wines, handmade linens, and ceramics from Deruta and Gubbio.
How to get there
Our home is located in the very heart of the historic centre of Assisi. A car is not needed because you can walk to all of the sights and there is a grocery store, fruit vendor, butcher and pharmacy all within a very short walk. If you come by train or fly into Sant' Egidio airport, it is a short taxi or bus ride to our home. If you fly into Rome, there is a very convenient and fast train called the Eurostar that will zip you to Assisi in one and a half hours. From the train station it is a ten minute taxi or bus ride to our house. This easy access to good quality public transportation also makes our home an ideal place to use as a base to visit all of the nearby towns and cities: Rome, Florence, Gubbio, Orivieto, Siena, Arezzo, Cortona, Todi, Perugia et cetera.
