The Umbria region

Umbria's central location makes it a natural choice for a home base when visiting Italy. A reliable rail and bus system quickly and economically gets you around to see all of the major sights. Quieter, and less overrun than neighbouring Tuscany, Umbria is also an enjoyable place to tour with a car. Its relaxed pace make it a wonderful place to visit with a family, or for a couple or individual looking to relax
Umbria enjoys a relatively mild climate year round. Some cold and rain in the Winter, glorious Springs, and warm pleasant Summers. Fall is truffle and mushroom season. It is a region that enjoys world class art and culture and breathtaking nature. The Falls of the Marmore are the highest in Italy, and in the 1700 were one of the major stopping points for artists on the Grand Tour. In addition to a rich history of Etruscan, Roman and Medieval art , contemporary art and music thrive today with the famous Perugia Jazz and Spoleto festivals.
The Assisi area
Assisi is arguably the most famous town in Umbria thanks to its patron Saint Francis. While Assisi is in itself a medieval hilltop town with a small village's charm, it also holds a prominent position on the international stage. Assisi attracts religious pilgrims and spiritual leaders from all over the world, as well as artists, writers and academics interested in its rich artistic and historic patrimony. It is also great place to relax and have fun. Family friendly restaurants, streets and squares that kids can run around in by themselves, great shopping - it is a place that has something for all ages.
Assisi is a small town where kids can run around safely and meet other children. Let them teach you where the best gelato is! The main square is just footsteps from the apartment. Excellent range of quality, family friendly restaurants all a short stroll from the apartment. Our favourite grocery store delivers for free. Paola, our housekeeper, is also willing to cook and run errands for you for an extra fee. Enjoy the local shopping: olive oil, wines, handmade linens, and ceramics from Deruta and Gubbio.

The apartment was even better than I expected from the internet description. Located right in the centre of Assisi and near to all amenities. Laura Graham (owner) was very kind and attentive and made me feel very much at ease which was so important to me as I was on my own and a little nervous as this was only my second holiday on my own since the death of my husband. I had a lovely holiday and I have already recommended the apartment to all of my relatives and friends! |
Guestbook for Il Gatto Mammone
"My son and I were able to spend 3 weeks together at this quaint apartment in Assisi. I do not believe we could have been in a more central location. We alternated between strolling down the stairs to the bar for our morning coffee or eating in using the kitchenette. We saved lots of money by shopping daily and either cooking our lunch or dinner. Assisi has plenty to see, from the churches, to the surrounding hillsides, to just strolling with a gelato. After the first week, we felt less like tourist and more like people who definitely felt the peacefulness of the area."

"My husband and I spent a fantastic month here last fall. The apartment had all the comforts for a delightful stay. We were only steps away from the butcher and also from the fruits and veggies lady who also sold excellent Italian wine! Seconds from the apartment we found charming restaurants and outdoor cafes. In walking distance of the apartment are all of Assisi's sites of interest, including the hermitage of Saint Francis on Mount Subasio, its many churches and sanctuaries and a even a winery. Taking the train to Florence was inexpensive and convenient. Likewise to Rome, where we did some sightseeing and returned by train on the same day! Later in our stay, we rented a car (also inexpensive) and traveled to the Chianti Valley one afternoon (great memories), to Pisa another day, to Siena, to Florence and even to San Marino. We immensely enjoyed the picturesque and historical towns around Assisi. So much to see and to do! The apartment was a great base with easy access to the highways. My husband thoroughly enjoyed driving, especially in the mountains. The hosts are the most welcoming people and really go out of their way to make you comfortable. Come and stay with them, you won't regret it!"

"In a word, this apartment is wonderful. In recent years we have traveled often to Italy. This year we decided to try a rental in hopes of a fuller Italian experience. We chose Assisi, as it is small enough to comfortably explore, yet rich in art, history and walking opportunities. We chose this apartment with high hopes because of its central location and new amenities. It readily exceeded our expectations. It is a very clean, comfortable and relaxing place for sleeping, preparing meals and planning each day's adventures. Stepping out the door, one is within a minute's walk of the centre of town, or within a few steps of exploring quiet back streets, or within a fifteen minute stroll of the hiking trails of Mount Subasio. Neighborhood grocery stores and vegetable markets are nearby, along with local restaurants, cafes and gelato vendors. The family from whom we rented are delightful. They provided us with a good introduction to Assisi and went out of their way to ensure our experience was positive. We stayed for over four weeks, and left with fine memories and hopes of returning to this special "home away from home."
