Looking for a vacation that will be restful and inspiring?

Our recently renovated 800 year old apartment offers a very comfortable place to stay right in the very center of historic Assisi.

Wake up in the morning to church bells ringing. Walk down the stairs into the main piazza and have a cappuccino with the locals. Many good restaurants, museums, churches and shopping are all walking distance from the apartment. There is no need for a car. Open air markets, the grocer, butcher and pharmacy are all footsteps from the apartment.

Just outside of the town is Mt. Subasio, offering scenic hiking trails that lead you to the places that St. Francis would go to pray. Inside the Basilica of St. Francis there is the fresco cycle by Giotto and other works by Cimabue and Simone Martini. Visit the churches of St. Damian and St. Clare, where the story of the Franciscan order unfolded. Admire the facade of the Roman temple of Minerva, and the Roman forum museum in the main square. Hike up to la Rocca, the medieval fortress that protectively overlooks the town.

Throughout the year there are many festivals and music concerts and art shows. In the summer there are local sagra or food festivals celebrating the special dishes of each nearby small town. Italian language lessons, book binding, and cooking lessons could be arranged as well as local olive oil and wine tastings. Learn about the art of punto d'Assisi or cross stitch. Shop for Italian maiolica from the nearby town of Deruta.

Rent together with our other property for an ideal location for a family reunion.

Regular train service to Rome makes Assisi easily accesible. We can pick you up at the local train station and bring you right to the apartment. For those flying in from Europe there is the local St. Egidio airport, where we are also happy to meet you.

The Umbria region

Umbria's central location makes it a natural choice for a home base when visiting Italy. A reliable rail and bus system quickly and economically gets you around to see all of the major sights. Quieter, and less overrun than neighbouring Tuscany, Umbria is also an enjoyable place to tour with a car. Its relaxed pace make it a wonderful place to visit with a family, or for a couple or individual looking to relax

Umbria enjoys a relatively mild climate year round. Some cold and rain in the Winter, glorious Springs, and warm pleasant Summers. Fall is truffle and mushroom season. It is a region that enjoys world class art and culture and breathtaking nature. The Falls of the Marmore are the highest in Italy, and in the 1700 were one of the major stopping points for artists on the Grand Tour. In addition to a rich history of Etruscan, Roman and Medieval art , contemporary art and music thrive today with the famous Perugia Jazz and Spoleto festivals.

Our home is located in the very heart of the historic centre of Assisi. A car is not needed because you can walk to all of the sights and there is a grocery store, fruit vendor, butcher and pharmacy all within a very short walk. If you come by train or fly into Sant' Egidio airport, it is a short taxi or bus ride to our home. If you fly into Rome, there is a very convenient and fast train called the Eurostar that will zip you to Assisi in one and a half hours. From the train station it is a ten minute taxi or bus ride to our house. This easy access to good quality public transportation also makes our home an ideal place to use as a base to visit all of the nearby towns and cities: Rome, Florence, Gubbio, Orivieto, Siena, Arezzo, Cortona, Todi, Perugia et cetera.

"In Assisi one experiences the best of Italy."

In recent years we have had the good fortune to spend much time in Italy, finding rentals in Florence, Venice, Cinque Terre and Assisi that have ranged from good to excellent. Laura and Ezio's apartment in Assisi is superior to all of them. It is ideally situated in the center of town, close to events and activities and the boyhood home of Saint Francis. Dining choices, museums, churches and more are within short walking distances. The apartment itself is wonderfully light, clean and comfortable, ideal for a short or a long stay. Florence has its art and architecture, Venice its history, and Cinque Terre its natural beauty, but Assisi is rich in all of these, along with a spiritual life that draws people of all faiths from around the world. For anyone who likes to walk, Assisi and its surrounding Umbrian towns are well preserved and a joy to explore. Mount Subasio is a hiker's dream, with enchanting forests and high mountain meadows. After visiting Assisi in the 1930's, French philosopher Simone Weil wrote, "Saint Francis certainly knew how to choose the most ravishing spots to practice poverty: He was far from being an ascetic..." Assisi and its surrounding countryside still maintain the natural, inspiring beauty Francis experienced. While Italy has many treasures worth seeing, if one is interested in experiencing the best Italy has to offer in an idyllic, peaceful setting, one could hardly do better than Assisi. And whether one is interested in ancient history or art, fresh Italian cuisine, natural wonders or matters sublime and eternal, one could hardly do better than choosing Laura and Ezio's apartment as a base for exploring.
