Home description
Sophia’s House is a particularly pretty modern bungalow built with traditional Greek touches and finished to a very high standard. The quaint hamlet of Aspro (which means “white” in Greek) is located 1.7km inland from the seaside resort of Almyrida.
On the outskirts of the hamlet, Sophia’s House looks out from its hillside position across a valley of olive groves to stunning views of Souda Bay, Karga Island, the Akrotiri Peninsula, and the Turkish Fort at Aptera. Sophia’s House has the quiet corner plot at the end of a small group of houses, and borders acres of land covered in mature pine and olive trees. The land drops away below the villa which allows for an exceptional setting for the entire property but especially for the gorgeous infinity pool and semi-covered front terrace.
Sophia’s House is painted a lovely shade of pale yellow and has Mediterranean blue pergolas, windows and doors. It has been thoughtfully designed on one level and is therefore particularly suitable for the elderly or less able. There are a number of different terraces for a choice of sun or shade, all of which take in the outstanding views.
The upstairs roof terrace is also known as the sun terrace for obvious reasons, and it is fully tiled and equipped with sun-beds and umbrellas. There is a covered front terrace which is equipped with a table and chairs, and an open terrace by the infinity pool which also has sun-beds and umbrellas. The warm summer evenings are perfect for sitting and watching the ferries going to and from Athens, or the lights twinkling from the Akrotiri Peninsula on the opposite side of Souda Bay.
Sophia’s House is an ideal retreat for either romantic couples or families of up to six persons, but if you can drag yourself away from this lovely property, you are only a short drive from the sandy beach and many shops and tavernas in Almyrida.

The Crete region
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Sophia's House is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
Aspro area
Aspro is a very quaint and traditional hamlet set on terraces on the side of a hill overlooking Souda Bay. Aspro is a very green village as the surrounding countryside is covered in olives groves and conifers. There are many off the beaten track walking trails leading from Aspro. The lovely village of Almyrida is only 3 minutes by car from Sophia's House, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, the Villas Crete Holidays Tourist office owned and run by Frankie Miles, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a free copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.
