The South East England region

The South East England region

Kent is described at "The Garden of England" and the countryside here is beautiful! Whitstable is the jewel in the string of towns along the north coast of Kent and you'll love the town!

Kent is famous for growing hops and its Oast Houses where the hops are dried. These can be seen all round the county with their distinctive conical roofs.

Ashford, Kent

Faversham

Frith Farm House is conveniently situated for visits to the coast (you can see the sea from our grounds), the many castles, historic houses and gardens of Kent, London and France.

Canterbury is just half an hour away and is designated a World Heritage Site. A visit to the wonderful Cathedral is a must and for those who enjoy shopping and eating out the City provides both quality and variety. The Marlowe Theatre attracts may plays, musicals and operas from around the world - including many pre or post their West End run.

For those who prefer smaller market towns, the Historic Medieval Market Town of Faversham with over 150 listed buildings is only 6 miles away. Shepherd Neame, Britain's oldest brewery company is based in Faversham and tours of the brewery can be arranged (booking a cab home is strongly advised!).

Leeds Castle is only 15 minutes away and is a great place to spend a day. You can enjoy the wonderful moated castle and grounds, take a Segway tour, play a round of golf and even swing through the trees at 'Go Ape' if you are feeling brave! If here in November, the firework display at Leeds is a must.

National Trust properties in Kent include Chartwell, Penshurst Place, Hever Castle, South Foreland Lighthouse at Dover and Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens.

Slightly further afield but well worth visiting is Rochester with its Cathedral and Castle. Nearby, is also Dickens World and the Historic Naval Dockyard at Chatham. For younger children, there are plenty of wild life parks and farms to visit (including the Aspinal Foundation sites at Port Lympne (nr Ashford) and Howletts (nr Canterbury). Farming World (Faversham) is especially popular with younger children.

Dover Castle (English Heritage) is about 30 - 35 minutes drive away. Allow plenty of time - it is a fabulous day out with great views of France from the White Cliffs upon which it is perched. Be transported back in time to WW2 and further still in the splendid Medevial Castle.

If you are interested in wine (silly question!), the winery at Chapel Down provides the opportunity to tour the vineyard and wine making facilities as well as to taste their award winning wines (chosen by Kate amd Wills for the Royal Wedding in 2011).

The coastline nearby is also well worth visiting with Whitstable (30 minutes away) famed for its many small and quirky shops and plenty of eateries - many offering freshly caught seafood. For sandy beaches we recommend Broadstairs and adjacent coastline (Josh Bay has a lovely sandy beach and is good for surfers). Margate also offers acres of sandy beach and is undergoing something of a renaissance - with the Turner Contemporary proving a popular draw. Sandwich and Deal are also under an hour away.

Closer to home, Brogdale Fruit Farm Trust (which houses the National Fruit Collection) is 10 minutes away with guided tours and specialist courses for the enthusiast. It has a great many themed days throughout the year and several small shops selling quality organic food and local produce (the Butcher there is a particular favourite with guests) - his meat is quite popular too !

The nearby countryside and villages of the North Downs offer wonderful scenery, quiet roads that are great for cyclists, riders and walkers alike - with plenty of local pubs en route ! No need to get in the car for access to some of the most ancient woodland in the country, just walk from Frith - especially beautiful in the spring when the local woods are carpeted with blue bells.

A day trip to France is easily achievable. Dover or the Eurotunnel are just 35 minutes away and the Eurostar service to Paris and Brussels can be caught from Ebbsfleet or Ashford International - less than half an hour away. Ashford to London (St Pancras International) takes just 38 minutes on the High Speed Service from Ashford.
