BookThe South East England / Kent region
Castles, cathedrals, countryside and coast - is there anything that Kent doesn’t have? Well, no actually. From Dover’s white cliffs to the cathedrals of Rochester and Canterbury, there’s so much to see and do in the Garden of England. You can shop on cobbled streets, explore maritime history along coastal paths, tuck into fresher than fresh fish and admire brightly-coloured orchards, beautiful countryside and mighty castles. What are you waiting for?
History and Heritage
With castles and historic houses everywhere, it’s hard to know where to start when exploring Kent’s heritage. Make a pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral before visiting England’s second-oldest cathedral at Rochester which is also home to a well-preserved Norman castle. And on the subject of castles, King Henry II’s Dover Castle is a must-see.
Arts and Culture
The Turner Contemporary in Margate celebrates the much-loved painter’s association with the town by showcasing an impressive collection of historical and contemporary art. Folkestone’s Creative Quarter is a hive of arty activity with galleries galore and budding painters busy in studios. And why not take a boat along the river from Maidstone to the Museum of Kent Life, a fantastic open-air historical experience.
Must See Attractions
If you like castles and cathedrals then you’re in luck. Kent is blessed with the best in military might at Hever, Dover, Rochester and Leeds, whereas the cathedrals at Rochester and Canterbury are simply awe-inspiring. And for something a little different, Dungeness has the fascinating and slightly odd combination of nuclear power stations, fishermen’s huts, and the largest expanse of shingle in Europe.
The Ashford, Kent / Woodchurch area
18 Cherry Orchard is situated in the heart of the picturesque Kent village of Woodchurch. The property is located across the road from the 13th century Kentish Ragstone Church (restored in 1840s); a short walk from The Village Life Museum; and within sight (and 10minutes walk) of the windmill that overlooks the village. The windmill was once one of a pair, known as the Twins, and is open to the public on summer Sunday afternoons. By the path to the windmill, and a stone’s throw from the house, is a choice of two pubs, both with good food, gardens, and welcoming atmospheres.
The village cricket green is well used and includes a fantastic children’s playground and fitness area. Next to the church is a very successful Farm Shop stocking delicious local produce. The village also boasts a Post Office, a Local Shop and The Rare Breeds Centre – a great day out for families with young children.
Woodchurch is well placed to explore the surrounding countryside with castles, historic houses, vineyards and steam railways. There is a selection of golf courses and game fisheries; horse-riding opportunities, cycle trails and walks; and scenic drives to the historic local towns of Tenterden, Rye and Canterbury. The International Eurostar station at Ashford makes day trips to London, The Olympics and France all possible! But don’t forget to stop off at the Designer Outlet Centre enroute.
The nearest town is Tenterden, with a heritage trail that includes the huge array of ancient buildings and historic churches. The High Street is packed with independent and unique shops and restaurants. There is a leisure complex with swimming pool (and slides) and large children’s playground. And for a real historic adventure take the Kent and Sussex Steam Railway through the Rother Valley to explore Bodiam Castle and return by Canal Boat. The beach at Camber Sands is a favourite for families and is a short drive away across the fascinating Romney Marshes, steeped in modern and ancient history.
