Christmas Cottage is a quaint, early 19th century, mill workers cottage situated in the beautiful village of Clifton on the edge of the Peak District. The accomodation is generous for 2 people and is arranged over 3 floors which retain many period features including beamed ceilings, quarry tiled floors and original fireplaces. Tastefully decorated in a contemporary style it is an ideal retreat for a romantic break, walking holiday, sightseeing or for relaxing and getting away from it all.

There are many lovely walks from the doorstep, along the river or via the lanes to other local villages and the historical Georgian market town of Ashbourne is about half a mile away along an easy path to it's excellent shops and facilities. A short, scenic car or bike ride will take you to all the local attractions including Dovedale, Carsington Water, Alton Towers, Sudbury Hall, the Tissington Trail and Kedleston Hall.

The terraced cottage is accessed from a small front garden which enjoys the sun throughout most of the day, as do most of the rooms. It is a nice place to sit with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. You enter from a small porch into the dining room with its large feature fireplace and original tiled floor adding to its charm and character, to the rear is the galley style kitchen with all the essentials you will require for your stay.

The original winding stairs (be careful as you go up both flights), lead to the first floor with the light, cosy lounge to the front, also on this floor is separate cloakroom with toilet and hand basin.

The second flight of stairs lead to the splendid, spacious bedroom, it has a vaulted painted beamed ceiling, a king sized bed and its own en suite bathroom with bath, with hand held shower over, hand basin and toilet. Most rooms have views over the church and the village. Clifton is a pretty, peaceful village with a cricket pitch, children's play area and friendly country pub with beer garden within stumbling distance. Please note - due to the stairs this property is not suitable for anyone who has limited mobility. Dogs are welcomed for a small charge and we ask that they stay on the ground floor of the cottage.

The Heart of England/Peak District

Christmas Cottage is situated in Clifton, a pretty, peaceful village on the ede of the Peak District. Clifton is a quintessentially English village with church, cricket pitch, village hall hosting various events, children's play area and of course, the village pub. The pub is within stumbling distance, has a large beer garden and serves food. Our guests often comment on the warm welcome. There are many walks to go on without needing a car, often calling in a local village for lunch on the way or walking by the river.

Within half a mile is the historical Georgian market town of Ashbourne with it's excellent range of shops and facilities. It is well known for its antique shops, restaurants and pubs. It also has many independent shops, cafes and delis as well as supermarkets, takeaways, leisure facilities and tourist information. The Tissington Trail starts here and later joins with the High Peak Trail giving over 30 miles of easy walking or biking away from traffic.

A short drive to the east is Carsington Water with a wide range of outdoor activities to be enjoyed both on and off the water. You will find an award-winning restaurant, playground, courtyard shops, an interactive exhibition, bird hides and miles of footpaths and bridleways to explore. Head north a few miles to the Peak District beauty spot of Dovedale, where there are lots of walks and dramatic scenery along the river Dove and have tea and cake at The National Trust tearooms at Ilam Hall. Alton Towers, the world famous theme park is less than 8 miles away, and for the more adventurous there is the opportunity to do hang gliding, paragliding and micro lighting just up the road. Climbing, walking, biking, sailing, riding, wind-surfing, golf, caving, abseiling and swimming all within easy reach!

From rugged moorland to rolling hills and dales, and lush meadows to leafy forests, the Peak District has some of the country's finest scenery. Add Hollywood film locations, historic houses, glorious gardens, awesome attractions, world-class theme parks and fabulous festivals - and a host of quality places to visit and delicious local food and drink - and you have the perfect recipe for a brilliant break. Highlights of the local area include: National Trust properties within easy reach include Ilam Park, Kedleston Hall, Sudbury Hall, Hardwick Hall and Calke Abbey.

Chatsworth is one of Britains best loved stately homes and has been the venue for several film locations. A very scenic drive will take you to it's gardens, views, antiques and parkland. It also hosts many popular events through the year, including the Country Fair and horse trials. Once famed for it's hydros and spa treatments Matlock is a bustling town which leads to pretty Matlock Bath parks and river walks and cable car ride with stunning views, the Heights of Abraham.

Bakewell, home of the Bakewell Pudding is a picturesque market town with attractive courtyards, independent shops and cafes and a river walk. On the way stop at Haddon Hall, a medieval and Tudor mansion with terraced Elizabethan gardens full of roses.

Further North Castleton and the surrounding area is famous for its superb scenery and walks along Mam Tor, the Shivering Mountain, and it's caverns below ground, including Speedwell Cavern with its boat ride to the Bottomless Pit.

Buxton with it's glamorous Opera House and Victorian Pavillion Gardens continues to attract many visitors to its Georgian architecture and festivals.

For the active Christmas Cottage is really well placed for walks of all distances. The local area features trails suitable for biking and horse riding.
