The Heart of England/Peak District

The Peak District was the first National Park to be established within the United Kingdom, and is the second most visited National Park in the world.

A glance at the map reveals it to be the base of the rocky spine that runs from the north midlands to the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District (which also comprises the Pennine Way). It is the first significant area of hilly wildness encountered as you head north from the heavily populated areas of the South East and the Midlands. A glance at a satellite picture of the UK at night highlights this point more clearly – The Peak District is the pool of inky black wilderness surrounded by a sea of light pollution - for which reason please BRING a TORCH.

Ashbourne

Its location in the central part of England makes The Peak District the closest large wilderness area for many people - and the least costly to visit in terms of time, fuel and carbon footprint. It also makes the Derbyshire Dales area a particularly rewarding area to visit combining both the natural beauty of the scenery (and the outdoor pursuits that go with it) with the incredible variety of historic, cultural and industrial attractions that come from its proximity to the surrounding towns and cities. In the Peak District it is possible to go rock climbing in the morning (on either a climbing wall or the real thing), spend the rest of the day at Chatsworth or Alton Towers and go to the opera at Buxton Opera House in the evening – all within a 30 minute drive of Peak District Spa.

Peak District Spa lies within the Derbyshire Dales part of the Peak District, known as The White Peak due to the whiteness of the limestone rock which makes up the spectacular gorges cliffs and caves for which the area is famous. Arguably the most scenic and beautiful of these landscapes is Dove Dale – the northern end of which is a pleasant walk from Peak District Spa.
