Croft House Barn is a lovely, characterful cottage for up to 6 (plus cots) in the scenic Peak District hamlet of Waterfall. 4 star Gold awarded by Quality in Tourism, you'll find three en-suite bedrooms - one on the ground floor - spacious living accommodation with ample comfortable seating, separate dining area and well-equipped light oak kitchen. But if you don't want to spend time cooking, the Red Lion Inn, with inviting log fires and serving home cooked food, is just a two minute stroll down the lane.
Carefully renovated over recent years, exposed stone and ancient oak timbers date from their 400 years use in the barn to our attached former farmhouse. (Guests privacy is paramount but we're nearby if needed!) Croft House Barn is now a cosy well-furnished home-from-home, with it's flat-screen TV with freesat, music system with iPod dock, CDs, books, games - ideal for relaxing in comfort after exploring the many attractions and activities within easy reach.
Outside patios to front and small one at rear, with furniture and BBQ are great for those fine days - savour the peace and quiet, bee and butterfly friendly flower and herb beds and our resident garden birds! Prices include high quality linens and towels, heating, electricity, freesat and wifi, together with fresh flowers and 'welcome' pack including local and homemade produce. We have a folding bed which can be provided for an additional charge of £25.
Croft House barn is close to some most scenic areas in the south west Peak District National Park: you can walk or cycle from the door to the spectacular Manifold Valley or drive to Ilam, Dovedale, the Roaches and Alton Towers Theme Park in 20 minutes. Historic market towns, Ashbourne and Leek are under 15 minutes away, while in around 45 minutes, you can choose from at least three reservoirs offering water sports, walks and wildlife, more than 6 stately homes or gardens, including the wonderful Chatsworth, Kedleston, and Haddon Hall plus heritage tours of The Potteries and Derwent Valley Mills. The South West Peak Park is heaven for those of us who love exploring historic villages with quaint pubs and tea-rooms for cream teas, cakes and warming soups, while for the more active, there's climbing, horse-riding and golf in addition to rambling and cycling for which it is even better known.

The Derbyshire region
The Peak District is celebrated as Britain's first and most visited National Park, largely because it is very central - so a great destination for reunions of family and friends. It is also easily accessed - 1 hour or less - from the urban centres of Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby and The Potteries. This doesn't mean however that it's overrun with people. Yes it has its honey pots - all worth a visit too - but its diverse landscapes, ranging from wild moorland to southern limestone hills, plateaus and steep sided valleys, the vast amount of footpaths and cycle trails, fabulous historic villages and market towns, mean it's possible to avoid the crowds even on the busiest Bank Holidays.
With gorgeous landscapes providing the setting for stately homes, such as Kedleston, Sudbury, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth, its not surprising that The Peak District has been favoured for film locations. Apart from walking and cycling, our location in the Southern Peak provides opportunities for a wide range of activities such as climbing, caving, riding heritage steam railways or cable cars, horse-riding and golf, plus water sports at Tittesworth, Rudyard or Carsington Water. The many possibilities for history lovers include the world's first factories on Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Trail, historic lead mining remains and museums or The Potteries Trail in Stoke-on-Trent, home of England's Pottery Industry.
Primarily however, The Peak District is most visited for its wild places, pastures edged with dry stone walls, glittering river valleys, heather-clad moorland and nature reserves. A landscape so rich in wildflowers, native animal and bird species, it is a treat for naturalists, and photographers as well as those just wishing to relax in a natural setting.
Midway between Ashbourne, Derbyshire and Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands, Croft House Barn is ideal for dipping into those characterful small towns with their traditional markets, many pubs and restaurants, antique and specialist shops. Perfect for walks, cycle rides or car tours, its location in Waterfall is ideal for accessing the varied habitats of both the limestone and gritstone Peak, whether the rugged moorlands and gritstone outcrops of The Roaches in the Staffordshire Moorlands, or the limestone river valleys and villages such as Dovedale and Ilam or Alstonefield.
Croft House Barn in Waterfall really does provide a doorway into the beauty of the Peak District National Park. A country lane next to the cottage winds into the heart of the Peak Park, enabling you to explore the spa town of Buxton, Bakewell - famed for those pies, tarts and its vast Monday markets - Hartington, Tissington and many more towns or villages together with many well-known trails, without venturing on main roads. What's more, you will experience some of the most dramatic scenery in the area along 'back roads' routes!
Waterfall itself is a tranquil, historic hamlet in the Southern Peak District. Croft House Farm is one of a group of stone cottages in a conservation area around the tiny village green, still boasting a robust set of stocks and old water pump. Waterfall is fortunate enough to still have a pub; The Red Lion Inn.
At about 900 feet, Waterfall nestles in hills, notably Waterfall Low with it's cluster of trees providing a spectacular backdrop. People can be surprised to learn that there is no Waterfall here. The name refers to fact that in dry weather the nearby River Hamps, a tributary of the RIver Manifold, suddenly disappears underground and reappears at Ilam a few miles downstream.
Croft House Barn has many walks from the door, the best known being The Manifold Way - a disused light railway - now an 8 mile walking and cycle trail which follows the river through a beautiful wooded valley. Other attractions within 20 minutes of the cottage include the massive leisure park of Alton Towers - Merlin Entertainments flagship attraction in the UK, Blackbrook Zoological Park - home to some wonderful meerkats and the largest collection of bird species in the country, The Coombes Valley RSPB nature reserve and The Churnet Valley Railway with its steam train rides through beautiful scenery.
In neighbouring Waterhouses, you'll find Ye Olde Crown Inn, a cafe, convenience store with Off Licence and a Post Office. The nearby Yew Tree Inn at Cauldon is also worth a mention, housing a unique collection of antiques and curios, as well as some good real ales.

Thank you so much for such an encouraging review! It's very heartening that you've taken the trouble to give feedback on your stay at Croft House Barn and great to have you recommend it to others. We do our utmost to ensure the cottage will be inviting and comfortable and it's particularly rewarding to be able to welcome people for return visits. We're glad you've discovered - like us - that while we're close to big attractions like Dovedale, we're equally accessible for some magnificent but less well known part of the Staffs and Cheshire Peak District. We look forward to an opportunity to welcome you again!

Thank you so much for the super review - most kind. We're delighted that you could easily access so much to appeal to all the family, from the cottage. It's also very lovely to read that you've felt quite at home here - exactly what we hope for. In fact we're rather hoping that you still haven't quite succeeded - that we might lure you all that way to re-sample more of the place's charm and the chance for some catching up!
