"Doesn't do what it says on the tin!"

We stayed at Lakeview in June 2013 with our 13 month old daughter. We were initially impressed by the spacious accommodation, quality linen and furnishings, quiet location and relaxing views from the windows.
However we realised within 20 minutes of arriving that the house was not going to be relaxing for us, especially with a small child:
1) There are tons of plug sockets all over the house, no socket guards were provided. Take these with you if you book this place.
2) There are sets of hard stone steps in the house, and a slippery carpet on the staircase. Our child is at the age where stairs are like a magnet - we spent the whole of our short stay moving the one (very poor quality) stair-gate from the top to the bottom of the stairs and vice-versa each time we had to use the bathrooms (which are both upstairs), with child in tow. The owner really needs to provide two stair-gates in this property. It would also make sense to plaster the walls along the staircase - whilst the exposed brickwork is charming, it made it a trying task to fit the stair-gate properly and, more importantly, safely.
3) No cupboard locks are provided in the kitchen. We improvised by tying up the door handles with a carrier bag! Again, bring these if you book here.
4) The garden is very steeply sloping and absolutely not suitable for a child who is only toddling. Again, hard stone steps to get in and out of the house due to being on a slope.
5) Curtain fabric is very thin. Take blackout blinds if you don't want your kids to be up with the dawn.
6) Limited space on entering the house due to ginormous dining table blocking the way. Awkward with pram etc. and rather strange feeling, dining in the porch area...
7) No table to speak of in the spacious kitchen, oddly, so we had to ferry everything to and from the kitchen (up and down those hard stone steps!) every meal time.
8) The internet access is almost non-existent. Kept us away from phones and iPads for a few days, so not necessarily a bad thing, but would be fatal if you needed to work, or be accessible.
9) There was a long list of things to pay for in the event of damages / breakages. This took me very much by surprise as I thought that risk of damages was something you take on, running a holiday rental. It made me very nervous of handling things or letting my child touch anything. Thankfully she didn't vomit anywhere!
All of the above were tiresome, but nevertheless manageable. However there was one thing which was completely beyond our control and that was the lack of views from the house. Having booked this place mainly because of the supposed views, we realised they were only accessible in the lounge when standing up!! All the windows are built high up into the walls, great for putting things out of our child's reach, but absolutely terrible for enjoying any sort of view. It led to a very oppressive atmosphere, and since the weather was awful and we were indoors a lot, it was a bit like how I'd imagine a prison to be.... The view from the main bedroom was nice - good if you want to spend your holiday in bed :-)
We ended up leaving a day early as we didn't feel relaxed or comfortable in this house. Having said all this, the owners were very helpful during the booking process. Also, if you are a bigger family with others to help mind the kids, and out all day in nice weather, this is probably a good place to stay.
