The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region
Le Marche, in central Italy, lies between the Appennines and the Adriatic coast. It is characterised by ancient hill-top villages and small farms. Tourists are far less evident than in neighbouring Tuscany and Umbria.
Ascoli Piceno (population 50,000) is the ancient capital of the region, renowned for the marble-paved Piazza del Popolo and the Quintana. There are Roman ruins and a wealth of medieval buildings. It has museums, an art gallery, theatre, concerts and craft shops (especially pottery). It is a university town and there is light industry in the Tronto valley to the east. Tourism is not dominant. The town has supermarkets, street markets and many fabulous restaurants from simple trattoria to sophisticated tables.
From Ascoli Piceno, there is access to : - The Adriatic coast at San Benedetto del Tronto, an Italian family beach resort, excellent for families (40mins) - Sibillini mountains (40 mins) In addition to ski-ing and walking, the National Park boasts wolves, golden eagles, wild boar and porcupines. - Medieval hill-top villages many of which hold fairs and food and wine festivals during the summer months
Ascoli Piceno / Morignano area
Morignano is a hamlet of about 25 houses and three churches situated 480 metres above sea level in the foothills of Monte Ascensione. There are now only four resident families farming the steep hillsides.
Local amenities are at Venagrande (5kms) - Post Office, village shop, chemist and bar. All other facilities are in Ascoli Piceno (11 kms)
It is a great centre for a walking holiday, whether on roads with minimal traffic or on tracks across the hillsides. Almost every evening during the summer months, you can find a food or wine festival with music in a hill top village within 30 minutes drive. The major festival in Ascoli Picena is associated with the Joust of the Quintana which takes place during the first weekend of August when up to 1500 residents parade in medieval costume.
