Enquire nowThe South East England / Sussex region
West Sussex enjoys some of the best weather in the U.K., and was recently officially recognised by the Met Office as being the sunniest county in Britain. Offering a wide range of activities and events, the local area includes miles of coastline with award-winning Blue Flag beaches, plenty of seaside towns, and the natural beauty of the South Downs, recently declared a National Park.
Chichester, a beautiful market town with a delightful marina, is the cathedral city of Sussex, and Brighton and Hove on the East Sussex coast is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe. Arundel and Lewes are beautiful historic towns with thriving independent shops and restaurants, and both have imposing castles that can be visited.
Portsmouth, just over the county border in Hampshire (and only 40 minutes by car), has fabulous historic dockyards (home to the famous HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose) and great shopping and entertainment options at Gun Quay Wharf nearby.
The Arundel / Yapton area
Yapton is a quiet village with a beautiful old church (housing the oldest font in Sussex), a handful of shops and three village pubs, including The Maypole, CAMRA's West Sussex Pub of the Year 2011. The nearby historic town of Arundel has some fascinating shops along with the internationally famous castle, the Arundel Wetland Centre (home to kingfishers, water voles and many hundreds of wildfowl), a small county cricket ground, and hosts an annual theatre, music and arts festival which attracts visitors from all over the world.
Climping beach, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis are only a short drive away. A stunning, unspoilt stretch of coastline, Climping beach (along with the undulating sand dunes of Littlehampton's West Beach) are declared to be of Special Scientific Interest, and remain beautifully undeveloped. To the east is Littlehampton, a typically British seaside town on the mouth of the river Arun, and home to the famous East Beach Cafe (an iconic building that has won more than 20 national and international awards for design and architecture) - the fish and chips are highly recommended too. To the west of Climping lies Bognor Regis, recently voted the sunniest seaside town in Britain. With an array of shops, restaurants, pubs, plenty of outdoor activities, and a Blue Flag beach, it has something for everyone.
Heading inland, Goodwood Racecourse is only 15 minutes away, and its many attractions include the annual Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival, and Vintage Goodwood. Of course, they have a full racing calendar too, and for horse racing fans, Fontwell race course is also nearby. For history buffs, the excellent Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is a must-see, and the open-air museums at Amberley (industrial heritage ), and Singleton (historic buildings) are ideal for both adults and children.
The South Downs, now a National Park, are great for walking or cycling, and offer many great picnic spots. They're also awash with country pubs, many offering fantastic food, local ales and stunning views.

The owner forgot to explain that the code he gave us was not for the door but to open a key box ! We litterally panicked since we could not join any contact... but (after a few hours) a neighbour was able to help us... and after that we could enjoy this property, big enough for six adults. Everything was clean and in very good condition. The location is well situated, between Brighton and Portsmouth, only 5 mn from Barnham station from where many trains leave for London Victoria with very cheap fare at off peak hours. In spite of a very rainy weather, we managed to visit Bath, Portsmouth, Beaulieu, Brighton, Arundel, Petworth... and spent one full day in London. |
