Whether you want to just soak up the beautiful scenery, explore the Cathar castles, walk in the mountains, sample wine from the Corbieres vineyards, canoe down the Aude, go horse riding from the village, or discover the holy secrets of Rennes-le-Chateau, a holiday at Les Reves has something for everyone.

The accommodation consists of two bedrooms (both with ensuite facilities), kitchen, large lounge/diner and private terrace.

It sits in extensive grounds that are on the edge of a pretty village - Arques. There is a private swimming pool, summer kitchen, table tennis table, etc. that are shared with a 5 bedroom house on the same site.

Languedoc-Roussillon is a region of great visual contrasts and a fascinating history. In addition to the spectacular and largely undiscovered Prynenees, just three of the region's highlights are....

City of Carcassonne

Since the pre-Roman period, a fortified settlement has existed on the hill where Carcassonne now stands. In its present form it is an outstanding example of a medieval fortified town, with its massive defences encircling the castle and the surrounding buildings, its streets and its fine Gothic cathedral. Carcassonne is also of exceptional importance because of the lengthy restoration campaign undertaken by Viollet-le-Duc, one of the founders of the modern science of conservation. A visit to the visually spectacular medieval city of Carcassonne is a must. This is where filming has taken place for many films including Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

Cathar Castles

Romantic and ruined, the medieval fortresses which range in a broad arc around Carcassonne have come to be known as the Cathar castles, though in fact many of the castles in question were built after the Cathars' demise. The Cathars were a sect strong in this part of France, who were proscribed as heretics by Pope Innocent III. The area has had a torrid history. None more so than during the 13th century when the Cathars were persecuted by Simon de Montfort. But the Cathars hill-top castles remain as spectacular as ever.

Canal du Midi

This 360-km network of navigable waterways linking the Mediterranean and the Atlantic through 328 structures (locks, aqueducts, bridges, tunnels, etc.) is one of the most remarkable feats of civil engineering in modern times. Built between 1667 and 1694, it paved the way for the Industrial Revolution. The care that its creator, Pierre-Paul Riquet, took in the design and the way it blends with its surroundings turned a technical achievement into a work of art.

The Arques area

Rennes-le-Chateau (Birthplace of 'The Da Vinci Code'?)

Rennes-le-Chateau is a small village perched on a mountain top that has a staggering history. It is here that in the 19th Century the local priest is said to have discovered the Holy Grail! For those interested in such things there are many books on the subject and in the 1970s the BBC broadcast a series of documentaries on Rennes. If you have read 'The Da Vinci Code' then you will also recognise a number of names and stories here, as recently Tony Robinson discovered in his television programme 'The Real Da Vinci Code'.

Canoeing & White Water Rafting

There are many places locally where you can enjoy the thrills and spills of canoeing and white water rafting. It mainly takes place on the Aude which runs north out of the Pyrenees towards Carcassonne and eventually to the Mediterranean Sea. The whole family can join in and you don’t need previous experience. The closest canoe starting point is at Couiza just 10 minutes away by car.

Gorges de Galamus

There are a number of spectacular gorges in the area, non more so than the Gorges de Galamus. Here you can visit a mysterious hermitage built precariously on the side of the gorge and also view strange people ‘canyoning’ – throwing themselves into the water at one end of the gorge and hopefully getting to the other end in one piece!

Horse Riding

Enjoy a ride through the magnificent scenery with the instructor that taught Kevin Costner to ride in the film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves! The stables are in the village just a 2 minute walk from the house.

Chateau d’Arques

Just 5 minutes walk is the Donjon on the western side of Arques. This is a 13th century castle, although an earlier castle was burnt to the ground by Simon de Montfort in 1217. It is open to the public.

Walking in the Hills & Mountains

The Pyrenees are both spectacular and largely undiscovered. There are many easy walks locally or you can drive into the high Pyrenees within the hour where you can find walks and climbs to suit all ages and abilities.

Windsurfing & Swimming

There is a beautiful lake just outside the village where you can swim, windsurf or just enjoy the view (10 minutes walk or 2 minutes in the car). There is also a large lake with watersports at Carcassonne.

Skiing

In the winter, skiing is also easily within reach, with the nearest ski resort only 45 minutes away. The high mountains of Andorra are within 1 hour 30 minutes drive.

Tennis

Excellent all-weather tennis court, just 100 yards away.

Tree Walking

You can walk amongst the trees on suspended walkways and ropes in exciting tree walking adventure playgrounds for all the family. Nearest is at Alet-le-Bains just 20 minutes away.

Do Nothing

Or you can simply relax by the pool and soak up the delights of doing nothing!

There are a range of airlines and airports that serve the area.

The nearest airport is Carcassonne (40 minutes away) which is served by Ryanair from London Stansted, Liverpool and East Midlands.

In addition Flybe fly to Perpignan (1 hr 15 minutes) and British Airways and Easyjet fly to Toulouse (1 hr 30 minutes).

“Great accommodation in an ideal location.” My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Les Reves. The house and gite were very comfortable and well appointed, providing everything we needed - all mod cons but also retaining some of the more traditional French style. The setting is idyllic - we enjoyed exploring the local area as well as venturing further afield. With little time to plan our trip, we found the owners extremely helpful, offering suggestions and advice to make our stay all the more relaxing as well as making sure we had all we needed. We are planning a family visit next year!

“A wonderful week” We had a wonderful week staying in this property in Arques. Although the house was the smaller of the two, it was really spacious, exceptionally well-presented and very clean. The bedrooms were very big indeed with the en-suite bathrooms between the two rooms so parents and teenagers didn't disturb each other! My 15year old son swam every afternoon in the pool, and we ate on the terrace, in view of the meadow stretching away to the mountain to the left, and the picturesque village with the bell-tower to the right. We had fabulous excursions to Carcassonne, Rennes le chateau and the snowy mountains and had a great horseride through the hills. I can't recommend it highly enough.

“Relaxed and lovely” We travelled as a group of 11 to Arques in June this year. From the beginning it was a straightforward trip, with the owners being accommodating around us staying over asn unusual period. We hired the house and the Gite as we needed plenty of space, and it provided that. Despite the weather being relatively inclement for the time of year we had a great time, spending a fair amount of time around the house, using the barbecue and also the nearby tennis courts and football pitch. The house is well located for wine tasting and Carcassone, and the owner pointed us in the right direction regarding activities in the area . We couldn't have asked for more, it was a most enjoyable trip. I would definitely go back, and would not hesitate to recommend if you are looking for a relaxed trip with the choice of activities should you be inclined

“Poor value for money and not to be recommended” Most disappointing venue, the premises were gloomy, cheaply and strangely renovated and poorly furnished. The electrics bordered on the dangerous - junction box without cover plate, wall light held on by perished insulating tape, mains cable between house and gite not sunk below ground. The head room of bedrooms in the main house was so low as only a dwarf can avoid cracking their heads on the beams while the gite is attached to an industrial unit. The windows of the gite were also extremely dangerous for young children, as they were unlockable and low down, encouraging youngsters to lean out. Basics like parasols around the fully exposed pool were missing - not what you expect from property in this price range. Poor value for money and not to be recommended. Response: I am extremely surprised by your opinion of your stay at our property. I imagine it is influenced by several factors: 1. that on arrival your party was very annoyed that you didn't have internet access despite the fact that I clearly don't advertise that I have the internet. You were also upset that you could not find the keys. When I showed you that they were where I said they would be, you found it hard to believe you hadn't seen them. 2. by my having to withhold (for the first time in 8 years) £200 of your damage deposit due to breakages (torn wall paper, shattered toilet lid, a cafetiere, table tennis table, a defaced picture frame) and the 32 man hours of cleaning needed after you left (including a heavily soiled toilet seat and badly stained bed linen). I did offer to send you the photos. This was a fraction of the true cost. The junction box was behind a heavy chest of drawers which you moved along with many other pieces of furniture which, despite your assurances, were not put back in place on departure. I am astounded that you considered it safe to put a chair and pillows against this dangerous box so that a baby could be nursed at night. What you describe as the mains cable is in fact an empty conduit for the television cable. This cable has, for the last 4 years, gone at roof height between the two buildings. The two upstairs bedrooms in the house are in the dormer so the roof does slope, but there is full height in the majority of one room and in half of the other (we recommend that children sleep in this room). The ceilings in the 3 other bedrooms are all at full height. We have a close relationship with a local farmer, who stores some of his machinery in our barn - it is clearly not an industrial unit. As well as cutting our grass he provides horse trekking in the area - a facility which I remember some of your party stating that they very much enjoyed. I am disappointed that you found the quality of service poor. I provided the parasols demanded on the first day within 24 hours. I replaced the broken microwave the day after it was broken but you didn't unpack it. I immediately provided the extra bedding requested . You praised the cleanliness of the pool during your stay. I am not sure what more I could have done for you but I hope you will find somewhere more suited to your particular needs next year.
