We enjoyed our stay, not long enough to truely appreciate what the region has to offer. The accomodation was comfortable and suited our family to a tee. Fascinating history and rustic charm abound. Great hospitality and attention to detail. |

The perfect location for exploring Burgundy. You are close enough for the exquisite wine tastings yet deep enough into the tranquil countryside to escape from the hustle and bustle. The warm welcome you receive from Anna is like coming home to Mom. One of my favorite spots in France. You can't go wrong here. |

It's a beautiful main house with something of the "Manderley" about it; cast iron, ivy clad features and a decorative fish pond as a center piece. A large black dog barely acknowledged our arrival. We stayed in the converted barn which had a large communal area fireplace, and kitchen. They've used a lot of really nice reclaimed architectural stuff- some of the tiles were very old indeed. Anna (our host) is British and was very laid back and welcoming. She also had a great selection of local cheese and wine for us to try. Response: Thanks for taking the time to do a review. |
Guestbook for The Retreat
"Very relaxed after a wonderful holiday in this beautiful home," Jan Picton, Australia
"I thought of you & all the decisions you're making around the beautiful place you have there. One small bathroom is more than enough for me! Thanks so much for your photos - You made us feel at home so easily & everyone loved it - especially dinner that night. We'll recommend you to everyone & I'll also mention you to our travel agent." Ian and Margaret Anderson, Melbourne Australia
"Wonderful, serene, restful house on the river bank"
From the warm welcome of the owner on arrival to the last minute of our stay we loved this perfect retreat near Dijon. If you want to get away and explore parts of Central France this is your place - very comfortable beds, very clean and well looked after, but yet still a very rustic feel to the house. You can hear the stream gurgling below you whilst you sit on the bridge just outside your doorstep. Great for watching the sunset with a delicious glass of burgundy in your hand - shops and good restaurants close and lots to see all around the countryside. We cooked a bit and the kitchen is fully equipped if you are inclined to do self-catering. Our favourite place was Chateauneuf which was around a 20 min drive. Great views of the countryside steeped together with history of the French Revolution. Fabulous restaurant right in front of chateau - highly recommended. We plan to go back soon.
"For the romantic at heart!"
Our time at the River Cottage has been unforgetable and truely romantic. Anna made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and the cottage far exceeded our expectations. It was very clean and offered everything you could need from a self-catering holiday. The surrounding areas are full of quaint little French towns to explore and offers beautiful scenery around every corner. The area definately offers a lot to see and for those who wish to, a lot to do! The cottage is perfectly located to visit Dijon, Beaune, Nuits St. George, The Morvan National Park, a good selection of chateaus including La Rochepot and Chateneauf-en-Auxios. You will also be ideally placed to visit the various wine cellars on the Wine Route. The surrounding towns also offer something for those looking to purchase some vintage French chic, in the various antique shops scattered throughout the area. Make sure to bring your bike or hiking shoes along as the scenery is just absolutely delightful, even a couchpotato would be tempted to go for a walk in the evening. Burgundy is a very special region in France, and The River Cottage is a gem hidden away from the usual tourist traps. It offers you a chance to take a deep breath and to relax, to soak up all that is French and makes this area so special - wine, cheese, meat and good people. The River Cottage is like a good vin de bourgogne, take your time to enjoy it slowly and it will reveal its heart to you.

"Wonderfully welcoming!"
This absolute gem is tucked away in the Burgundian countryside. The owner is so welcoming and accommodating, not to mention the amazing dogs! The gite is extremely comfortable, very clean and perfect for whiling away hours cooking and enjoying the local wine. The heart of the wine region is a little trek but well worth the time and effort to explore the beautiful countryside and beautiful wines. If you like being out of the tourist trap and in the heart of the real France - this is the place. R. Dowdall, UK
