The Algarve region
The Algarve region is blessed with a wonderful climate, ideal for swimming, sunbathing and water sports in summer, and mild enough in spring, autumn and winter for tennis, golf, clifftop or countrywide walking, exploring and sightseeing.
The legacy of a 500 year occupation by the Moors can be seen in the architecture and historic towns of the region, such as Silves (6 km from villa), with its towering castle walls, ancient cathedral, and museum. Winding streets lead down to the Roman bridge on the River Arade, from where boat trips can be taken to Portimao. For the modern visitor there are the necessary banks, restaurants, a covered food market, supermarket and shops.
Places of interest include Caldas de Monchique, a spa village dating back to Roman times. Recently restored, it has a lovely restaurant, and is en route for Foia, the highest point of the Algarve, from where there are spectacular views right down to the coast, through the Monchique hills with their fragrant Eucalyptus trees. On the coastline Portimao, an old fishing port, now a bustling town can be seen, with its modern road bridge.
The historic old port of Lagos, with nearby beautiful caves at Praia Dona Ana (accessible by fisherman's boat from the beach) and towering sandstone cliffs is well worth a visit. The beaches with golden sand and towering cliffs are quite breathtaking. The local fishermen take visitors for a tour of the caves, and often visitors swim from the boats within the acquamarine water of the caves.
Faro old town (45 kms), and Tavira with its camera obscura , and nearby bird nature reserve are also of great interest.
For train lovers, an excellent service runs from Tunes Station (just beyond Algoz village), main line to Lisbon, over the River Tagus right into the city itself (a three hour journey), with some trains continuing on as far north as Oporto. Trains are comfortable, reasonable in price and a joy to use. Concessionary prices are available for young people and over 60's on production of passport.
An hour's drive past Faro takes you across the border between Portugal and Spain, and Seville is now a 3 hour drive away. (Check your car insurance first with your hire company).
Armacao de Pera / Algoz area
Armacao de Pera is the nearest coastal resort which is 15 minutes drive with its beautful beaches and golden cliffs, and there is a wide range of large and small beaches to expore along the coast which are ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Boat trips to explore the caves and grottos are available for hire, as are water and jet skis.
Banks and a supermarket may be found in Silves. This beautiful old city, with its old Cathedral and castle walls is a joy to visit.
The “Algarve Shopping” precinct near Guia offers a large supermarket, a multiplex cinema, bowling alley and food court, as well as numerous smart clothing shops.. There are many local restaurants in nearby villages and towns, and near the beach at Armacao de Pera, serving local cusine, fresh fish and seafood. There is also a selection of high quality restaurants serving Mediterranean & international food within 15 mins drive.
Local food markets in Silves and Armacao de Pera sell beautifully fresh fish, meat and vegetables, ideal for cooking at home in the kitchen and on the barbeque.
Other leisure activities include Zoomarine with its Dolphin and sea lion & bird of prey shows. A water slide park "The Big One" near Porches is within 10 mins drive, and the sand sculpture exhibition is 10 mins away.
Golf at Silves 10 mins, Salgados 15 mins, Vilamoura (3 courses) & Penina about 30 minutes drive away, and situated 2 minutes from the luxury Amendoeira a golf resort with two championship courses design by Nick Faldo & Christie O'Connor opening in 2008.
Numerous countryside and clifftop walks (walking guide books and maps in sitting room). Without taking the car, you can walk out from the villa through the orange groves in the direction of Silves along the old country lanes.
Monchique mountains, old town Faro, Portimao, old port of Lagos, Sagres, Tavira are all interesting places within driving distance.
Horse riding is available at Quinta de Saudade, on the lower Albufeira road, about a ten minute drive away.
Local markets in Algoz, Armacao de Pera, Albufeira and many other small towns operate monthly (see list in villa for dates).
How to get there
