The Algarve / Central Algarve region
The Algarve is a popular tourist destination yet retains much of the local culture particularly in inland areas. Temperatures can reach 40 degrees in the hot summer months but the effect is modified by the cooling breezes coming in from the Atlantic. Though many places were destroyed in the earthquake of 1755 there is still plenty to see in places such as Portimao, Silves and Lagos. Alternatively take a drive to the most south-westerly point in Europe, Cap St Vincent or go the other way and explore the lovely countryside near the Spanish border.
The Armacao de Pera / Pera area
Pera is a large village lying between Armacao de Pera and Albufeira. There are supermarkets, shops, cafes and small restaurants locally but a wider choice is located within a 5 minute drive.
Armacao de Pera is the nearest coastal resort which is a short drive away. There are stunning sandy beaches including Praia Grande which stretches for over a mile from Armacao to Gale. Further along there are a wide range of small beaches set in coves to explore along the coast, all of which are ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Local boat trips to explore the caves and grottos are available for hire, as are water and jet skis. The bustling resort of Albufeira can also be reached within 10 to 15 minutes. There is a wide range of restaurants, night clubs, bars and cafes to choose from to while away a day or evening.
On those odd days when the weather is not so good or you want to excape the heat, the Algarve Shopping Centre on the outskirts of Guia offers a large supermarket, bowling alley, multiplex cinema, food court, as well as numerous other small shops including boutiques, shoe shops etc.. Local food markets in Silves and Armacao de Pera sell a wide range of fresh fish, meat and vegetables, ideal for cooking at home in the kitchen and on the barbecue. This complex is a short 10 minute drive away.
Other nearby attractions include Zoomarine (5 minute drive) which is a wildlife centre with dolphins, sea lions etc. Its is possible to swim with the dolphins but pre-booking is necessary. A 10 minute drive away is a water slide park 'Aqualand' whilst another one 'Slide and Splash' can be reached in 20 minutes.
The old capital of the Algarve, Silves with its dominating castle and quaint streets is only a 15 minute drive away. This beautiful old city is well worth a visit and it is now possible to travel on a boat from here to Portimao. Further on from Silves is the 'mountainous' area of Monchique with its famed spa and piri-piri restauarants. The highest point of the Algarve, Foia at 4000 feet is nearby and breathtaking views of the Algarve can be seen from here.
For those that like to play golf the nearest course at Salgados is a 5 minute car journey. Other courses that can be reached within 20 or so minutes include Silves, Amendoeira (2 courses), Gramacho, Pinta, Pine Cliffs and Balaia.
Horse riding is available at Quinta de Saudade which is only 5 minutes away..
For those that enjoy visiting local markets these are held regularly in local towns. For dates of these see details in the villa.
