The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region

The prefecture of Ceret, famous for its annual cherry festival and museum of modern art is a short drive away. Beyond Ceret the old Roman road leads to the picturesque Côte Vermeille with the artists’ enclave at Collioure and seafood lovers paradise of Port-Vendres once the home of René Mackintosh.

The regional city of Perpignan is a thirty-minute drive away with its bustling shops, ancient canal network and fascinating Arabic quarter. Further up the coast you can reach Montpelier in one and a half hours and the historic Cather city of Carcassonne in less then two. For lovers of walking Arles is a great access point to the famous GR10 footpath.

We don’t pretend that La Paloma is a perfect ski location, but in the winter there are a number of ski areas within an hour or two’s drive. This works well if only some of your party are keen skiers and others prefer the village life and mild temperatures around La Paloma. The nearest resort is at Vallter 2000, about 1.5 hours away in Spain. This is good resort for beginners. For more advanced skiing the resorts around the plateau at the top of the neighbouring Tet Valley provide lots of choice. It will take you a couple of hours to drive there and we can recommend hotels if decide to make it an overnight trip. It is a good idea to carry snow chains if you plan to visit either of there events. The roads are normally cleared each day, but you can get caught out by a sudden heavy dump of snow. We have a selection of chains to fit most vehicles - so just ask.

Arles sur Tech area

La Paloma in on the edge of the tiny medieval village of Arles sur Tech, 30 miles inland from Perpignan in South West France. Located in the Languedoc region of South West France in the beautiful foothills of the Pyrenees in the Valispire, Arles sur Tech is a short drive from the beaches at Collioure on the Mediterranean coast. The border with Spain is close by with easy access to Roses and Girona.

Arles which is one of the most southerly villages in France and is just a few miles from the Spanish frontier where you can access Figures, famous for it’s Salvador Dali connection and the historic Catalan city of Girona. The valley itself is a beautiful place used by ‘Lance Armstrong' as he trained for the Tour de France.

We are gradually putting together our own 'villa holiday blog' where we sharing some tips about our favourite restaurants and places to visit. These all have Google maps included so it's well worth making a note before you set off.

Coll Frers, the village butcher has a fabulous selection of meat, poultry, and charcutery and the local Spar has fresh supplies of vegetables each day and a fresh fish stall outside each Friday. A short drive away, the towns of Amile les Bains and Ceret offer a wider range of shopping, daily markets and well stocked supermarkets.

Less than 15 minutes away:
Fishing, climbing, golf, tennis, a sports centre, a theatre/cinema and bird watching.

Less than 45 minutes away:
Beach, sailing, water skiing, boat hire, wind surfing, flying, skiing/snow boarding, scuba diving, a zoo and a theme-park.

Further details indoors:
There is plenty of space for indoor and outdoor living here at La Paloma. In 1956 a local chiropractor and his wife chose the site to create a villa to live in and a separate suite of rooms for them to practice from.

When my wife and I bought the house in 2003 we converted the practice rooms into extra living accommodation, installed a swimming pool and created extra terraces. La Paloma now offers sleeping accommodation for up to 12 people.

We have installed a second kitchen on the lower floor which is often used when two families come to stay, or when the lower floor is used as a 'granny/nanny flat' or a teenagers (or parents!) retreat.

La Paloma is the ideal venue for a family reunion, celebrations or two family holidays. The two-story layout of the property lends itself to large gatherings. In addition to sleeping 12 people in the bedrooms there are three sofa beds to accommodate a further 6 people.

There is room for 12 in the living room and 12 in the dining room. The open fire can be used to create a comfortable atmosphere. To prepare food you will find a cooker, an oven, a microwave, a fridge, a freezer, a kettle. You will also find a dish washer, a washing machine, a clothes drier, an iron and ironing board. The owner has also provided cutlery, crockery, glassware, cooking utensils.

One of the most important reasons for us buying a house in France was our love of food and wine. The main kitchen at La Paloma usually becomes the main gathering place we are there with our friends and family.

The kitchen is well equipped with all mod cons and some interesting traditional French features. It has a table that will comfortably sit eight people, an American fridge with ice maker and modern gas cooker along with all the utensils and equipment required for the most ambitious cook.

A small library of cookbooks includes books from Elizabeth David though to Rick Stein should you be stuck for inspiration.

La Paloma now comprises the following accommodation:

* Villa
Family room with 1 double & 1 single bed and en-suite bathroom
Double room
Twin room
Family bathroom with shower & WC
Separate WC
Large kitchen/diner
Large lounge with two sofa beds
Large dining room

* Apartment
Family room with 1 double & 1 single bed and vanity unit
Double room with vanity unit
Lounge diner with one sofa bed
Kitchen
Shower
Separate WC

With this combination the house can provide beds for twelve people with option to use the sofa beds for a further 6 people. Cots available on request.

Further details outdoors:
There is a private south facing swimming pool, a south facing garden, a south facing patio area, a south facing balcony, panoramic views, interesting views, a barbeque.

The pool is 9mx4.5m with Roman Steps at one end and surrounded by a large terrace and grass area. There are many sunbathing areas and we have a high level of privacy due to the location of the pool terrace.

Built in an old vineyard, La Paloma is surrounded by wonderful grounds with extensive terracing and seating areas for outdoor dining. Gardens on all sides, old vineyard behind, various terraces, balcony, barbecue, private gated drive and plenty of parking, 18 garden chairs, 10 beach chairs and various tables.

Guestbook for La Paloma

"We hired the whole house for a family reunion. Family members came from Hong Kong (via India) and the east and south west of England. Ages ranged from 14 - 75. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable 3 week stay. The facilities were excellent, and the pool superb. Views are stunning, and the local towns interesting to visit. I would highly recommend La Paloma as a holiday venue."
- Sarah from Norwich, August 2006

"As a group of 11 we hired La Paloma for a long weekend away from the UK. The property itself was ideal - spacious, with everything you could possibly need in the house to ensure a comfortable, hassle free stay (and a lovely pool!). Arles sur Tech, the village La Paloma is based in, is lovely and quiet and the prioperty has a lovely view of the Pyrenees. There are also lots of beautiful French towns/beaches just a short drive away for a day/morning trip (Ceret , the town where Picasso lived, has a lovely french market). You couldn't ask for a more ideally situated property really! La Paloma is so well placed you could turn the weekend into anything you wanted it to be - adventurous/quiet/ relaxing...just brilliant! Would definitely recommend!"
- Kristy from London, June 2007

"This is a fantastic house and apartment for a large group, in a superb location overlooking a small French town with very friendly and welcoming local people. We were well looked after before and during our stay and would strongly recommend it to anyone who wants a pleasant and peaceful location but in easy reach of coast, mountains and plenty of attractions."
- John from Corbridge, July 2008

"We stayed at La Paloma in August 2008. We live in th USA but my family lives in France. This was a perfect place for all of us to spend time together. The area is absolutely wonderful with lots of hiking, exploring to do and of course the proximity to the ocean and Spain. As for the house itself, we were all enchanted. It accommodated all 12 of us perfectly with room to breath but it also had everything needed and more. The pool was a hit with the elders and the teenagers as well. The best part was the quality of care we received when we ran into a water problem. The caretakers were extremely nice and John, the owner, called me to check up on the situation. It was resolved in one day. We will definitely go back and we were all sad to leave La Paloma. Thanks again."
- Corine from California, August 2008

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at La Paloma for a week in Aug 08. The house was great, and definitely very child friendly - the children saw all the steps as a challenge! We felt completely at home, and (unlike previous self catering holidays) spent most evenings cooking (in the very well equipped upper kitchen) and chatting on the balcony. The house is conveniently situated close to the local village (with a fabulous Spar shop very close by), although it is not interrupted by the noise of traffic. The pool area is great, and the views are spectacular. I would have no problem at all, in recommending this property to family and friends."
- Ali from Surrey, September 2008
