Gite | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
La Baie is the smaller gite at La Charriere and is set in the quiet french countryside of the Deux Sevres region. The property was once a farm and we now live on site and run 2 gites here. It's a great holiday getaway whether you are looking for a fun filled family holiday, a quiet romantic retreat or a fantastic France holiday with friends.
La Baie offers comfortable self-catering accommodation for up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms, has 2 bathrooms and a private garden. In summer guests have shared use of the heated outdoor pool and there is year round use of bikes and onsite activities including table tennis, snooker, badminton/volleyball and more! The setting makes it perfects for walks, horse riding and bikes rides; wine tasting and chateaux visits are all plentiful and we are happy to recommend great restaurants nearby for eating out.

About this location
The Poitou-Charentes region
Ideal for a scenic cycling holiday, the local area is quiet contryside dotted with villages and towns. Places to visit in the aras include:
Montreil-Bellay: Charming town 1/2 hrs drive away set by the river. Excellent chateau to visit offering tours in English, picnic by the river and view the ancient Medieval town wall. It is a great place to visit.
Rochmenier: 1/2 hrs drive to visit the old Trogolodyte village which is well worth a visit. The cave homes are preserved as a museum - fascinating for all ages. On the way back, visit the Zoo at Doue La Fountaine
Villandry: Beautiful chateau with breath-taking gardens that are famous throughout the world.
Fontevraud: Amazing architecture to be found at the Abbey at Fontevraud, famed for being the burial place of Richard Coeur de Lion ( the Lion Heart himself) and full of French and English History. Nearby Puy de Fou boasts famous medieval style son et lumiere shows which will delight any audience.
Futuroscope: Well worth just over an hours drive to Poitiers, Futuroscope is the thinking man/woman/childs answer to Dinseyland. Lots to see and try and discover.
Saumur, Angers, Chinon: These famous French chateaux towns all all within a 75 minute drive and each is brimming with history and a variety things to see and do; museums, mushroom farms and art gallerys to name but a few!
Guests can cycle to one of the nearby villages for fresh baguette and croissants every morning, or in the evenings to a bar or local restaurant.
Argenton-Chateau is the nearest town (5 mins drive) and has all basic neccessities (small selection of shops) along with a large open air swimming pool and a lake where you can go out on a pedalo. The meandering streets of the town make for a very pleasant afternoon stroll and at dusk there are often otters to be seen around the 'Lac'.
Bressuire is a 15 minute drive and offers a more than adequate selection of supermarkets, restaurants, a town centre market every Tuesday and some wonderful patisseries! There is an old chateau here too, and a bizarre but fantastic antiques and oddities store.
Local vineyards offer wine tasting all year round - we are happy to recommend the best places for a 'degustation'. Try one or two different wines and buy bottles direct from the producer.

"Excellent facilities and quiet out of season"
My husband, student daughter, and I stayed at La Baie in September 2012. We appreciated the wide range of facilities on site including the pool and excellent DVD library. The beds were comfy, the showers good, and lovely fluffy towels. As we were out of season we were the only people staying so enjoyed the quiet of the gite and area. It is a good time of year to explore the chateau of the Loire, only about an hour drive, and many other interesting places nearby. It would be easy to fill more than one week here. Other people have highlighted the many good aspects of this property including the helpfulness of Charlotte and Paul, the owners. We would return again.

"Fabulous time was had by all"
This was our second holiday at la Baie, the first time with family and this year with friends. We originally chose the gite to accommodate my father who is disabled but enjoyed it so much that when we were arranging a holiday with some friend we didn't look anywhere else. All the kids had a ball, learning to swim and riding bikes, rescuing frogs, canoeing, exploring and playing. Similarly the adults had a great time because the kids were so well amused. The gite is very well equipped and the surrounds are idyllic, the pool is just a few steps away and Pauls and Charlotte have went to great efforts to make it feel like a home from home. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend la Baie to anyone, young or old, couples or families, those who like to get out and about or those who simply want to read a good book, drink a glass of wine and relax. Fabulous. We'll definitely be back.

"Peace and tranquility - perfect."
We stayed for a week in July 2012 (2 adults plus 2 children). The setting is rural France at it's best, being wonderfully quiet and tranquil. The Gite, 'La Baie' is spacious and offered all the accommodation we needed, plus a bit. One can either sit and relax in sun loungers enjoying the view across fields, use the swimming pool, or participate in a number of sporting activities including archery, badminton, table tennis or pool. We took the option of also using 4 of about 20 cycles made available to guests. The area is relatively flat, so not too difficult. Paul and Charlotte generously provided fresh eggs and Paul took us for an evening of wine tasting. There is a nice reataurant in Argenton about 3 miles away. Most of the time we BBQ'd or used the cooking facilities in the Gite. A thoroughly enjoyable place to stay, with welcoming hosts. We intend to return!

"Peaceful and relaxing, while everything on hand to entertain the children"
My husband and I and our two children (aged 4 and 21 months), together with my sister and her family with children of similar ages had a fantastic holiday here back in June. Paul and Charlotte have made the property a great place to live and to go on holiday, through hard work and love for the place.
The gite itself was more than adequate, basically decorated but with all modern gadgets for an easy holiday, perfect for families with young children. Outside space again brilliant, heated swimming pool, pond full of wildlife, slide, swing and sandpit, together with the huge amount of outside space where the kids could run around, perfect. Great collection of bikes for all ages, with the activities in the bar, table tennis (or pong pong as my nephew calls it!).
We spent most of the week just chilling out at the gite as it was so nice, but we did spend a day at a nearby zoo which was great and also went to a local lake with a play park and sandpit, next to a great cafe, fab day out.
Paul and Charlotte's hospitality was very welcoming and nothing was ever too much trouble. Your home is lovely guys, would recommend it to anyone.

"Relaxed, perfect for young children and very spacious accomodation."
La Baie is in a lovely rural location. The property itself is very spacious with an excellent kitchen and dining area. The pool is a good size and the kids were in it pretty much every day!
The roads around are very quiet with plenty of opportunity for family cycling using any of the multitude of bikes that are stored in the barn.
Paul and Charlotte make you feel very welcome and they seem to have lots of outdoor toys for small children (2 -4 yrs).
We spent most our time just relaxing by the pool or in the garden watching the kids play. The only day-trip we did was to bioparc doué la fontaine http://www.zoodoue.fr/ which is an eco-zoo about 25km away. This is probably one of the best zoos we've been to and the kids really enjoyed it.
If you want a relaxing family holiday this is the place for you.

"High quality accommodation in peaceful surroundings"
We stayed for one week in early June with our daughter, her husband and his parents. We all thoroughly enjoyed our week, striking the balance between going out and about and taking some much needed 'downtime'. We visited the troglodyte village, some local vineyards, the market at Thouars and just generally pottered around the area, read books, swam in the pool, barbequed and enjoyed the local wine. The accommodation is of a high standard, and well equipped for self-catering. Top tip: remember to take your own swimming towels! Make time to enjoy the sunset from the lounge window.
