The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Deux Sevres region
Ideal for a scenic cycling holiday, the local area is quiet contryside dotted with villages and towns. Places to visit in the aras include:
Montreil-Bellay: Charming town 1/2 hrs drive away set by the river. Excellent chateau to visit offering tours in English, picnic by the river and view the ancient Medieval town wall. It is a great place to visit.
Rochmenier: 1/2 hrs drive to visit the old Trogolodyte village which is well worth a visit. The cave homes are preserved as a museum - fascinating for all ages. On the way back, visit the Zoo at Doue La Fountaine
Villandry: Beautiful chateau with breath-taking gardens that are famous throughout the world.
Fontevraud: Amazing architecture to be found at the Abbey at Fontevraud, famed for being the burial place of Richard Coeur de Lion ( the Lion Heart himself) and full of French and English History. Nearby Puy de Fou boasts famous medieval style son et lumiere shows which will delight any audience.
Futuroscope: Well worth just over an hours drive to Poitiers, Futuroscope is the thinking man/woman/childs answer to Dinseyland. Lots to see and try and discover.
Saumur, Angers, Chinon: These famous French chateaux towns all all within a 75 minute drive and each is brimming with history and a variety things to see and do; museums, mushroom farms and art gallerys to name but a few!
Argenton Les Vallees / Sanzay area
Guests can cycle to one of the nearby villages for fresh baguette and croissants every morning, or in the evenings to a bar or local restaurant.
Argenton-Chateau is the nearest town (5 mins drive) and has all basic neccessities (small selection of shops) along with a large open air swimming pool and a lake where you can go out on a pedalo. The meandering streets of the town make for a very pleasant afternoon stroll and at dusk there are often otters to be seen around the 'Lac'.
Bressuire is a 15 minute drive and offers a more than adequate selection of supermarkets, restaurants, a town centre market every Tuesday and some wonderful patisseries! There is an old chateau here too, and a bizarre but fantastic antiques and oddities store.
Local vineyards offer wine tasting all year round - we are happy to recommend the best places for a 'degustation'. Try one or two different wines and buy bottles direct from the producers.

Guestbook
"Just wanted to say how much we all enjoyed our stay at La Charriere. Accommodation very comfortable, surroundings very relaxing indeed. The kids were always occupied; playing in the Barn, riding bikes, swimming in the pool or exploring the grounds - which gave us mums and dads a relaxing break too!" Tony & Liz (May 2007)
"The fact that my wife is a paraplegic, is always cause for concern when visiting a new gite for the first time having regards to showering, toileting and ensuring ample space for a hoist, particularly under the bed. We needn’t have worried, both gites were just fine and the fact that you have your own shower chair and that you observed the way my wife was manoeuvred around the grounds was very reassuring. I would certainly recommend this property to all, irrespective of wheelchair or not." Graham & Family (July 07)
"Once again can we thank yourself and Charlotte for helping to make our fortnight so stress free and relaxing. The disabled facilities for Alexandra were all that could be asked for, with ample space throughout for manoeuvring a wheelchair, whilst being able to hire a hoist locally greatly simplified our packing. The tans and the wine are rapidly diminishing but the happy memories shall keep us going till next year." Alistair and Margaret. July 2008
