Home description
This traditionally styled, recently built house is on the edge of a small hamlet in the wooded, hilly, lush landscape bordering the Dordogne and the foothills of the Auvergne.
A 10 minute walk or a short bicycle ride will take you to the larger village of Forges which has a bakery, small store and a friendly auberge serving great food. The village has a tennis court and a post office.
A short drive brings you to the picturesque town of Argentat on the Dordogne river itself. Here you will find supermarkets, restaurants, water activities and all the facilities you might need to enjoy a relaxing holiday or to find more active pursuits.
This is a deeply rural area and you may well find horses or cows looking over the hedge. Deer, woodpeckers and other woodland creatures can frequently be seen in the surrounding woodland.
The road between Argentat and Tulle runs along the valley and passes about 300 metres away, shielded by trees. Traffic noise can sometimes be heard, but the traffic is intermittent and rarely intrusive.

The Limousin / Auvergne / Correze region
The house lies on the border of the Dordogne to the west and south, the Limousin to the north and the Auvergne to the east.
The rolling countryside of the Limousin lies at the very heart of France, on the western flanks of the great Massif Central land mass. Sharing borders with mighty Burgundy, the majestic Loire region and the dramatic Auvergne, it is itself immersed in history. Strolling through the sleepy villages, there's a feeling that the modern age has passed by - so much so, that this rural region has earned a reputation as the 'Secret France'.
At the centre of the region lies the Limousin Regional Park and the historic capital, Limoges, renowned for its porcelain. Downstream, on the Vienne, St Junien has specialised in glove-making since the Middle Ages and in the nearby Monts de Blond, the pretty village of Mortemart is worth a visit. This area was a hotbed of Resistance activity during the last war and at Oradour-sur-Glane, ruins still stand as testimony to the village's inhabitants, who were burned alive by the Nazis.
To the south of Limoges, in the Correze, turreted Uzerche stands guard over the Vezere River before it plummets through the Saillant Gorges. Near Tulle, at Gimel-les-Cascades, the highest waterfalls in the Limousin plunge more than 150 metres into the Inferno. At the southern limit of the region, on a bend in the Dordogne River, lies lovely Beaulieu with its many fine houses. Nearby are the medieval towns of Turenne and Collognes-la-Rouge, the latter famous for the colour of its architecture.
To the west the Périgord Noir is distinctive in character. The high hills and dense woodlands are cut through by the Vézère and Dordogne rivers. The Vézère winds its way between the hillsides, providing dramatic settings for the villages of Sergeac, St-Léon-sur-Vézère and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac. Beyond Les Eyzies the valley widens and the river flows down to join the Dordogne beyond Le Bugue.
The Dordogne is a more majestic affair altogether, flowing through a broad valley perfect for agriculture. Drama is provided by the rocky outcrops at the edge: the Château de Beynac towers above the river at one point, while, a few kilometres beyond, La Roque-Gageac huddles between the steep cliffs and the water.
Argentat area
Forgès is in the middle of the Souvigne valley, between Tulle, the county town of the Corrèze, and Argentat in the Dordogne valley. It makes an ideal centre from which to discover a fast vanishing lifestyle. The Dordogne valley is increasingly the resort of choice for people who love France as it always has been. This is a land of small farms, trout filled streams and friendly welcoming people. Food is still taken seriously, with ingredients of wonderful quality which can be found easily. Limousin beef and veal are of worldwide fame, while Ceps from Corrèze fetch a premium price as far away as Paris or Toulouse
This is a wonderful area to walk, cycle and ride. Being in the foothills of the Massif Central, the air is like champagne, and the nights never so hot that one stifles. There are dozens of superb sites to visit within a short distance of here. Historical oddities like the Tours de Merle, the great dams on the Dordogne, bustling markets and great châteaux abound.
The river still plays an important part in Argentat life, though no longer the pre-eminent one it did for centuries. Nowadays tourists are also important and they will find plenty of things to do, restaurants to tempt their taste buds and sights to fill their cameras. But what sets it apart from many other towns in the area, is that it is a living thriving community in its own right. Life here doesn't end with the departure of the tourists, and there are a number of small companies providing work which has little or no connection with tourism. On the first and third Thursdays of each month, there is an excellent market, to which everyone throngs to buy their day-old chicks, to chat to their cousins, and to meet their friends in the bar of "The Fouillade" afterwards to have a glass of something fortifying before venturing back into the hills and up to the Xaintrie again.
How to get there
The house is situated close to the village of Forges between Tulle and Argentat in the Dordogne valley. It is about one hour's drive (mostly on a free autoroute) from Limoges airport, served by Easyjet, Ryanair and Flybe. A variety of budget car hire is available at Limoges airport. An alternative airport, but a longer drive, is Toulouse. If you are driving, it is exactly 500 miles from Calais although the nearest ferry port is Dieppe, which will reduce the journey by about 80 miles. For those who are greener, the nearest mainline train stations are at Brives la Gaillard or Limoges which are served by fast trains from Paris and it is possible to reach the house by bus via Tulle if you are determined not to drive.
Full instructions will be sent on confirmation of booking.
