Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
On the Western Mediteranean coast called Languedoc Rousillon : there are many resorts of fine sandy beaches Narbonne Plage, Marseillan Plage, Vendres, Valras.. A great selection of leisure activities, water sports, golf courses and activities for children with amusement parks are widely available. Famous towns as Cap d'Agde Nautical Resort, the Canal du Midi, Beziers with the Feria and excellent nearby wine tasting, Sete fishing port, Roman Agde and Carcassonne.
The Languedoc Roussillon stretches around the Mediterranean from the Pyrénées on the Spanish border, to the French Riviera, and offers many seaside resorts and sailing ports, with a range of activities such as sailing, all kind of water sports, sea-fishing, mountain biking, tennis, and golf courses, as well as ferias and festivals.
The Golf du Cap d’Agde was designed by Ronald Fream, (with18 holes, par 72 and 9-hole compact, Practice area with driving range, putting green and bunker). On the premises, there is a Club house with a bar, a restaurant and a pro-shop. Beginner golfers are welcome: lessons and training courses are available all year. The Golf Saint Thomas in Beziers has a typical Mediterranean atmosphere, with a wild and natural 18-hole course. The Golf of Lamalou les Bains (9 holes) is a unique location in the heart of the Regional Natural Reserve of Haut-Languedoc. In the club house there is a gourmet restaurant, snacks, pro-shop…
The International Tennis Club in Cap d’Agde is the greatest training centre in Europe with 31 courts, 8 of which covered.
Rowing, horseback riding, karts, bowling are some of many activities you can enjoy in the area.
The main activity of the region has always been the production of wine. The vineyards were first planted by the Romans. The Languedoc Roussillon is now the world's largest vineyard, and you will enjoy a visit to the “Caves” of the area.
You will find charming villages and interesting towns such as Perpignan and Nîmes, historic monuments, such as the medieval city of Carcassonne, the Roman viaduct of Pont du Gard and the Cathar castles in the Corbières, the abbeys of St Guilhem le Désert and St Gilles du Gard, and the Canal du Midi.
It has also some of France's best beaches and lively modern resorts such as Port-Camargue, la Grande-Motte, and Cap d’Agde, then going West, there are the resorts of Gruissan and Leucate, Canet-en-Roussillon and Saint-Cyprien, all offering a wide range of activities. The sandy beaches continue as far as Argelès-sur-Mer, where the coast becomes a series of rocky headlands sheltering in between, pretty fishing ports
The Argeles / Argeles sur Mer area
Languedoc-Roussillon - bordering the Mediterranean to the east and the Pyrenees in the south - is a area of spectacular contrasts. Gentle sandy beaches and lagoons are backed by rugged mountainous country - the setting for Kate Mosse's acclaimed novels Labyrinth and Sepulchre. It's also a region with an exciting mix of cultures: Spanish, Catalan, French and Moorish are fused in regional food, events and architecture.
The old province of Roussillon, which lies closest to the Pyrenees, was once Spanish and today its many Catalan traditions live on. Its capital, Perpignan, is a sunny city of palm-lined squares and is a good place to sample local food and wine.
In the far south of France, right at the gates of Catalonia and Spain lies Argeles ? the place where the mountains meet the sea. Argeles, has 7 km of sandy beach and 2 km of rocky coastline, with the entire resort and its little port classed as a blue flag area with clean bathing, and a beach which is cleaned daily. The seafront is flanked by 12 hectares of pine forest and a 3km tree fringed promenade. Despite its popularity the region remains largely unspoilt, with over 80% of the land still given over to agriculture. Argeles has two nature reserves: the Mas Larrieu right on the coast and the forest of Massane at the heart of the Alberes area. Just 20km south of Perpignan, in one of the sunniest regions of France, you will find sun, sea, mountains, catalan tradition, gastronomy, vineyards as far as the eye can see and a wonderful quality of life in a beautifully preserved environment.
Argeles sur mer is the main town of a group of 8 communes nestling at the foot of the Alberes massif. All the villages have grouped together to bring you many itineraries which take in culture, relaxation and adventure sports. There are itineraries which allow you to discover charming ancient villages, magnificent roman chapels, traditional crafts (glass making at Palau de Vidre for example). There is a railway museum at Sorede, a traditional farm at Saint Andre, the tortoises of La Vallee Heureuse, the eagles at Valmy?lots of visits giving you the opportunity to really get to know the area.
To the north west, the restored medieval fortress town of Carcassonne is a UNESCO world heritage site and a gastronomic destination too with local specialities such as cassoulet, confit de canard and saucisson sec (wind-dried sausages).
