BookThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
The Languedoc region boasts 300 days of sunshine a year - It enjoys one of the mildest climates in France and provides a relaxing atmosphere all year round.
There is much to see and do - miles of golden sandy beaches, the fantastic scenery and walking opportunities of the foothills of the Pyrenees. On the outskirts of Argeles is Chateau Valmy, with a nature trail, and a wonderful vineyard. The Chateau also holds open air musical concerts in Spring and Summer . Collioure, just 4 miles away - is steeped in history and has a multitude of restaurants, shops and Art Gallaries. There are Spas at nearby Le Boulou and Amelie-les-Bains, a Nature Reserves for bird-watching at Etang de Canet, an Arficaine Reserve at Sigean. Or you could visit the medieval walled city of Carcassonne, or the narrowest gourges in the world - "Gourges de la Fou" at Arles le Tech - this is to name but a few of the many exciting places you could visit if you want more than a lazy holiday gazing at the mountains as you sit on the balconies, on the beach or by the pool. There are many wonderful chateaus, castles & fortresses to explore - Carcassone La Cite - Castle Nou - Villefranche de Conflent's Chateau-Fort Liberia - Salses - to mention but a few.
There is a Guide Book, maps and brochures in the apartment for guests to peruse at their leisure.
The Argeles / Argeles sur Mer area
Among all the towns of the Pyrénées-Orientales, Argelès-sur-Mer boasts the longest coastline: 10 kilometres of coasts among which 7 are sandy beaches and 3 are rocky coves. The main 'Plage' has been awarded the “Blue Flag” for many years due to its clean sand and water. Alongside the beach runs a superb promenade lined with Restaurants. Follow the promenade, which is 1.6km long, planted with lawns and Mediterranean vegetation, to the picturesque marina of Port Argelès, with further restaurants, cafés and shops. On foot, by bike, by rollers, walking or running, the seafront is, winter and summer alike, the favourite place for everyone.
The apartment is ideally situated in-between the Argeles Village and the main Sea Front (Plage).
Argeles Village is actually quite large so don’t just stop at the first few shops – go and investigate. There are some fabulous small lanes with intersting shops and restaurants as well as those on the main streets
Other close amenities include:
Park - There is a large local park with football nets and a roller skating rink.
Tropical Golf - The “Tropical Golf” (Crazy Golf) is at the end of the road - and offers great fun for all the family with two different courses depending on your skills. When the water features are illuminated in the evenings it takes on a magical appearance. Opening hours based on time of year.
Golf – Saint Cyprien Golf Club - (Le Mas D’Huston, 66750 St Cyprien Plage, Tel: 68 37 63 63)
St Cyprien is located approx 20 minutes along the coast from Argeles.
Golf de Saint Cyprien is one of the most reputed golf destinations in the country and has two courses.
Markets - Argeles Village – All year, Wednesday and Saturday mornings, - rue and place de la République and place des Castellans. Argeles Plage - 15 June to 15 September, Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings - Parking des Platanes. Boulevard de la Mer 15 June to 15 September, daily from 5pm until midnight - Parking des Platanes, à la plage.
Chateau Valmy is on the outskirts of Argeles The Castle of Valmy is a private property, but the park of Valmy, recently acquired by the town offers the opportunity to discover the Mediterranean flora thanks to a nature trail.
Perpignan - The historic town of Perpignan is located only 15 miles (24km) away, and is the capital of Roussillon. It is very exotic with its palm lined promenade, vibrant painted houses and the aromatic spices of the Arab quarter filling the air. It has many interesting shops, and 13th century Palace of the Kings of Majorca.
Collioure on the Côte Vermeille is a 4.5 miles (7 km) drive, or a shorter more scenic cliff top walk , from Argeles Port . Collioure is a typical picturesque French fishing village with castle, art galleries, winding back streets filled with small shops and boutiques and wonderful restaurants.
Banyuls-sur-mer - Nestling in the foothills of Pyrenees, Banyuls is a charming old fishing village, with quaint narrow streets and excellent beaches. Banyuls-sur-Mer is probably best known in the region for the production of the Banyuls wine. The wines are produced from the vines which cling to the hills around the town. Also at Banyuls-sur-Mer is one of the oldest aquariums in France located at the Arago Laboratory and if you are interested in sculpture then there is the Maillol Museum.
Carcassone - Carcassone is the epitome of a fairytale medieval castle and the entire city is an unmisable place to visit. The fortifications consists of a double ring of ramparts and 53 towers.
Fort de Salses - The fortress of Salses began life as a Spanish defensive structure. It was started under king Ferdinand in 1497 and took several years to complete. However, under the Treaty of the Pyreneees, in 1659 it became French property, as did the whole of Rousillon. The fort de Salses is about 15 km north of Perpignan.
La Gourges de la Fou - Gigantic cliffs of red go up to the attack of the sky. These gorges are one of the narrowest in the world. They are 1700 meters length, by, in places, 250 meters depth, this geological site is very popular and frequently visited. Protected by a metal net and thanks to a footbridge installed over the entire length, all the families can, in full safety, enjoy the gourges.
Barcelona is only a couple of hours away and well worth a visit. It is the second largest city of Spain, and the capital of Catalonia.
