The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
Located in the southern most part of France, in the friendly village of Sorede and only 7km from the Mediterranean and 10km from the Spanish border in the foothills of the Pyrenees, this comfortable family home allows you to enjoy two countries and cultures at the same time.
This increasingly popular Catalan region, with it’s rich culture and passion for food, wine and rugby is renowned as the sunniest place in France, with the village of Sorede known as ‘The Jewel of the Alberes’.
Only 7 kilometres from the beach, with a choice of village shops, bars and restaurants, you can enjoy everything village life, the mountains and the beaches have to offer. This is ideal walking and cycling country, with year round sunshine, and typical Mediterranean night-life for teenagers just 15 minutes away on the coast.
If you fancy a day trip, the coastline is peppered with beautiful beaches, secluded coves and small harbours running right up to the edge of the Pyrenees Mountains and the Spanish border. Collioure, the jewel on the Cote Vermeille and favourite haunt of artists, is ten minutes away, and there are many local markets, promenades, long sandy beaches and cycle tracks to explore.
The Argeles / Sorede area
You will be spoiled for choice for activities and lunch and dinner venues. Golf, tennis, horseriding, fishing, watersports and waterparks are all within minutes of the house. The village is 'buzzing' with activity and offers everything you need without getting in the car.
There are six good village restaurants and bars with summer entertainment and Tuesday and Friday morning markets. Shop locally, or buy fresh fish and shellfish straight from the boats at Port Vendres to throw on the BBQ. The old coast road is an absolute treat, with spectacular views of the Mediterranean.
Travel inland to the beautiful mountain village of Ceret with its Spa and Modern Art Gallery, or north, to the vibrant Catalan City of Perpignan (30 minutes), Narbonne(1 hour) or Medieval Carcassonne, which is an hour and twenty minutes away.
Twenty minutes to Spain and the historic centre of Gerona is well worth a visit, as is the Dali Museum at Figueres. Visit Barcelona or Dali’s house at Port Ligat and lunch at the delightful fishing town of Cadaques, before heading to the stylish beaches at Begur, Roses and beyond.

Having rented several holiday properties in this area of France over the past 15 years, this one came out tops for us. Oh the joy of renting from someone who understands the importance of candles, hooks and mirrors! It was also a pleasure to read little notes around the property asking us to "Please feel free to ....." rather than the usual "DO NOT ....". The property is tastefully appointed with no unnecessary clutter, and the pool was simply gorgeous. |
