The Midi-Pyrenees / Hautes-Pyrenees region

The Midi-Pyrenees is the largest area of France. Home of Armagnac, Rugby and The Three Musketeers. Extending from the Dordogne in the north to the Spanish border. It is blessed by a fascinating range of scenery. Majestic peaks, high chalk plateaux, hidden valleys and fortified villages.
Cuisine and Wine of the Region:
Foie Gras-specially preserved livers of goose and duck.
Cassoulet-a hearty stew of duck, sausages and beans.
Confit de Canard or d'Oie-preserved duck or goose meat.
Magret de Canard-duck breast fillets.
Roquefort and Brebis (mountain goat) cheeses.
There are some excellent regional wines, such asfull-bodied red Cahors and of course, Armagnac to follow the meal. Try "Floc" a mixture of Armagnac and grape juice.
Major Festivals in The Midi-Pyrenees:
Festival Garonne (Toulouse, July)
Musique d'Ete (Toulouse, July/August)
Festival Albi-Jazz (Albi, June)
Carnaval (Albi during Lent)
Fete des 400 Coups (Montauban, September)
The department of the Hautes Pyrenees is covered two-thirds by mountains, it is just north of the French-Spanish border.
The Argeles-Gazost / Val d'Azun area
***TOUR DE FRANCE*** PASSES HERE JULY 2012.
Our valley, The Val d'Azun is a wide valley dotted with typical Pyrenean villages made up of stone houses and
slate roofs. It's a walkers paradise. It meanders into the Pyrenees National Park, the area has numerous lakes and exceptional flora and fauna, spread at the foot of the Balaitous, one of the highest Pyrenean peaks at 3144m. There's loads of marked paths in the area, ranging from the GR10 walking route, to gentle family circuits. Locally based guides can take you on escourted walks-we can arrange this for you from "Terrafirma". There are over 200km of fabulous trails for Mountain Bikers-we can also arrange bike hire. Rafting is available at several locations nearby, with various itineraries suitable for young children as well as the adult adrenalin packed variety. Other summer activities include horseriding , fishing and of course, rock climbing. The increasing popular sport of paragliding is also possible. This can be found at the next village up from "Terrafirma". In winter the Col du Soulor and Couraduque are home to an impressive 110km of cross country skiing, snow shoe trails, husky sleigh rides and children's toboggan area. 20 minutes drive from "Terrafirma". We can organise all equipment hire.
Argeles-Gazost
Our local town, Argeles-Gazost is a thermal spa, it can be reached on foot by a "yellow marked" wooded walk, starting at Terrafirma taking about 20-30 minutes. It has a fantastic Tuesday market and night market during the summer months, plenty of tasty restaurants and busy bars (catering for all palates and pockets) A more sedate ski slope than Cauterets, Hautacam is nearby, that we have found perfect for families. The ski passes are extremely well priced. All equipment hire, passes and lessons can be arranged from Terrafirma.
Cauterets
Cauterets is a 30 minute drive from "Terrafirma", again on the border of the Pyrenean National Park, another thermal spa town. It's a fanatastic place for walking including the famous Pont d'Espagne and Lac Gaube. This is the place for downhill skiing. As mentioned previously, at "Terrafirma" we can organise all equipment hire, ski passes or lessons for first timers.
