The Lombardy / Lake Como Area region

The Italian Lakes are a little slice of paradise. Elegant ribbons of blue water stretch out ahead, folded into the sun-baked foothills, with a spectacular back drop of the snow-capped Alps.
Lake Como offers hidden treasures just waiting for the visitor to discover them: charming corners forgotten by time, lakeside villages where nothing seems to have changed for centuries.
It is steeped in history with an immense collection of churches, architectural masterpieces and works of art covering the centuries. The lake is situated in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains, and offers an extremely varied landscape, with its' shores featuring a succession of pastures, and woods as well as harsh and impressive rock formations.
All this alongside elegant, lakeside villas with sub-tropical gardens, which provide a haven of peace and tranquillity and chic resorts such as Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Como itself.
Warming, in spriing and graced with natural beauty, the lakes are still a place to draw breath and wonder. Lake Como, oriented north-south, ringed by characterful old villages often wedged onto narrow beaches between rugged cliffs and water. Those classic lake images of flower strewn balconies, Baroque gardens and splendid waterside villas can be found here in abundance. Dotted around and between the lakes are some of Italy's finest art cities, such as Milan, Verona & Bergamo.
The most romantic and picturesque villages on the lake are Santa Maria Rezzonico, Varenna (15 min by ferry) & Bellagio (8 min by ferry), Lenno (visit Villa Balbianello, location for 007's Casino Royale as well as Villa Gaeta, right here in Menaggio) & Laglio (where George Clooney owns Villa Oleandra).
The Argegno area
Highly recommended is the ‘La Piazetta’ restaurant which serves fine contemporary Italian cuisine and also the Cafe Colombo which serves a very good cappuccino! The local wine bar is also a delight for enjoying an evening aperitif before dining out. Visitors can also experience luxury Lake Como dining at the nearby fine restaurants of ‘Il Crotto di Platani’ in Brienno and Il Gatto Nero’ in Cernobbio. A bus service runs through Argegno, north to the picturesque central lake resort towns and south to the nearby city of Como, where a wide range of cosmopolitan delights and attractions can be enjoyed from boutique designer shopping, trendy bars, clubs, the Villa Olmo events and the panoramic view Brunate funicular railway. Train links also operate from the city to Milan and its airports.
A fast ferry takes visitors to the central lake providing them with a beautiful and scenic way to see Lake Como. A motorway also conveniently leads to Switzerland.
You pass through the small town of Argegno (approx 700 population) when traveling up the Western shore of Lake Como from Cernobbio/Como to Menaggio.Well placed and sheltered, it is situated in a large inlet at the mouth of the Val d'Intelvi. This river flows at varying rates throughout the year as its tumbles from the mountains between Como and Lake Lugano.
Looking across the lake you can see Bellagio to the north and as far as Nesso towards the south. The village is of Roman origin and owes its name to the consul Publio Cesio Archigene. With the Lake being ruled by warring factions centuries ago, Argegno formed part of a defensive system, which extended as far as the ancient villa of Lenno and to Isola Comacina.
This picturesque and ancient village is crossed by the Telo stream which splits into two parts, after falling down from a the towns ravine. The two are joined by an old stone bridge with a lancet arch. From Argegno, it is possible to take a cable car up to Pigra (881 mts.), which is situated on a plateau that enjoys a beautiful view of the lake. From here, it is possible to go on to the Valle della Camoggia, which is in the oasis of Argegno-Cima della Duaria, a conservation area. The road, which runs along Val d'Intelvi, also starts from Argegno and after following this road for about about 16 km, you will arrive at Lanzo.
The best way to appreciate Argegno is to walk up one of the narrow lanes. Most are paved with intersecting fan pattern of small square stones typical in much of the area. This area is almost entirely residential but the walkways are impeccably maintained with potted red geraniums and colourful flowers contrasting with the ancient brickwork and facades.
