The Lombardy region

Lake Como has been famous and popular for centuries, due to its unrivalled beauty. It is still popular today for many more reasons: It is within striking distance of many interesting places - Milan, Monza, St Moritz and Lugano, to name just a few. It offers something for every type of holidaymaker from the sporty to chill-out to culture-vulture with water sports, golf, horse-riding, stunning villas and historic churches, shopping to die for (ask for our designer outlet guide), wine tastings, gourmet restaurants and some of the best pizzas you will ever taste at only €4 for a pizza margherita, you can't go wrong! It is also home to the island of Comacina and one of the most famous restaurants on the Lake, visited by everyone from Eisenhower to Clooney.

Argegno, 20km from Como

A popular destination for tourists, Argegno is situated in a large inlet on the western shore of Lake Como at the mouth of the Val d’Intelvi. It has a pleasant climate and is mild even in the winter months. With its’ beautiful panoramic location, one can see from the headland of Bellagio to the north and as far as Nesso towards the south. Argegno offers a surprising amount of facilities for a quaint lakeside fishing village – 5 good restaurants/pizzerias, 2 excellent wine bars (Enoteca and Bar Colombo), serving free snacks at aperitivo time every day.

Argegno offers a surprising amount of facilities for a quaint lakeside fishing village – 5 good restaurants/pizzerias, 2 excellent wine bars (Enoteca and Bar Colombo), serving free snacks at aperitivo time every day. There are 2 banks with cash points and a small store. And you won’t be able to resist Andrea’s home-made ice creams (made with whatever is available fresh that day, including cucumber!). The scent of the bakery will draw you up the narrow alleyways to find fresh brioche (croissants) and bread, baked daily on the premises by Louisa. Buy fresh vegetables from Mario and ask him for one of his superb recipes – always served with smile and he speaks excellent English. If that wasn’t enough, the village also now boasts a beautician and 2 hairdressers!

Argegno is also within striking distance of all Lake Como’s treasures, as it is a main bus and ferry stop-off point for the rest of the lake. Villa Balbianello (Star Wars & James Bond) is just around the corner, Villa Carlotta a short ferry ride away, as are Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna – get a centre lake ticket and visit all three in one day. The village is certainly of Roman origin, as it owes its’ name to the consul Publio Cesio Archigene. At one time Argegno was part of a defensive system, which extended as far as the ancient villa of Lenno and the Isola Comacina to obstruct the passage of invaders. At one time Argegno was part of a defensive system, which extended as far as Lenno and the Isola Comacina to obstruct the passage of invaders. The ancient centre of the village is very picturesque. It is crossed by the Telo stream and is divided into two parts, which are joined by an old stone bridge with a lancet arch.

It is possible to take a cable car up to Pigra (881 m), which is situated on a plateau with a beautiful view of the lake. From here it is possible to go on to the Valle della Camoggia, which is in the oasis of Argegno-Cima della Duaria, a conservation area. The road which runs along Val d’Intelvi also starts from Argegno and about 15 km along it one comes to Lanzo.

The Sanctuary of Sant’Anna: This was built in the seventeenth century but it was subsequently renovated. Inside one can find stuccowork and frescoes from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The Oratory of San Rocco in Pigra: Built in the fifteenth century, it contains frescoes from 1662 signed by S. Pozzi.

"Good value for price paid"

The 1 star review given by the previous reviewer is accurate but should not be taken too literally. Yes, there were ants in the kitchen but the problem was addressed and corrected in a day or two. And… More

Thank you for the time taken to write this very fair review and for addressing the negative comments of the previous renter. We do stress that the road is steep, but as you so rightly say, so are most of the roads around here - it's the price you pay for that amazing view! And EVERYBODY agrees - the view IS STUNNING! Even delivery lorries make it up though, so it is do-able and after the first day is really not problem, as you say.

"Be very careful before you rent this villa"

Views were exceptional, BIG ant problem inside, the road to villa is unbelieveable, and detracted big time from the overall experience. Parking is at best a huge challenge, we had small cars, need 1 person in front & 1 behind to guide the way out of the provided parking, still experienced damage to side view mirror. I would never rent this villa again, was a huge disapointment. In 1 bath to sit on toilet had to put feet in shower! Lots of little things like no ice trays.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at Villa Rosa. As you can see from the other reviews everybody has been very positive. We are always only a phone call away if you had needed us. This sumer has been incredibly hot and there are more ants than usual. Unfortunately other than putting ant killer down, there is not a lot we can do. Ice bags are provided in the top cupboard above the freezer. You must not have seen them - sorry! We do stress that the road is steep on our property descriptions and we come down to the village to meet you personally to guide you up the first time. Once you have done it a few times, most people find it really very easy. I am so sorry that your experience was not a good one!

"Beautiful views and lovely apartment!!"

Really nice, clean and bright. Comfortable beds for a peaceful nights sleep! All the amenities that you need for a self catering holiday. Amazing views from the apartment. Excellent stay, would rent this property again and recommend to others, no complaints from us!

So glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you for your review.

"extraordinary views. Spent hours on the balcony drinking in the vista (along with the vino)""

A tranquil, spacious, hideaway with the most glorious of views. The walk down to the bakery, through hundreds of years of history, was mesmerising and the walk back up was memorable (for my lungs!)

Beautiful pool and clean, modern accommodation.

"Excellent, very welll equiped villa in stunning location with breathtaking views"

Everything perfect really. Only problem we encountered was navigating the steep road access. Not impossible but needed care and we being a large group hired a large people carrier which made it worse. Had we know in advance the difficulty we would probably have hired two smaller vehicles. Would suggest when people book they are given some guidance in this regard.
La Brea restaurant which is the one closest to the villa was very good and would highly recommend.

"Wonderful view"

The house is quiet tricky to find. But just driving through this small streets in the hills, give you a feeling of Italy. The view you get there is just amazing. You can lay in the pool, sit on the balcony and you have this stunning panorama. The house is very new build and in good shape. I can recommend it for every big group.
