The Lake Como region

Lake Como has been famous and popular for centuries, due to its unrivalled beauty. It is still popular today for many more reasons: It is within striking distance of many interesting places - Milan, Monza, St Moritz and Lugano, to name just a few. It offers something for every type of holidaymaker from the sporty to chill-out to culture-vulture with water sports, golf, horse-riding, stunning villas and historic churches, shopping to die for (ask for our designer outlet guide), wine tastings, gourmet restaurants and some of the best pizzas you will ever taste at only €4 for a pizza margherita, you can't go wrong! It is also home to the island of Comacina and one of the most famous restaurants on the Lake, visited by everyone from Eisenhower to Clooney.

Argegno

Argegno, 20km from Como

A popular destination for tourists, Argegno is situated in a large inlet on the western shore of Lake Como at the mouth of the Val d’Intelvi. It has a pleasant climate and is mild even in the winter months. With its’ beautiful panoramic location, one can see from the headland of Bellagio to the north and as far as Nesso towards the south. Argegno offers a surprising amount of facilities for a quaint lakeside fishing village – 5 good restaurants/pizzerias, 2 excellent wine bars (Enoteca and Bar Colombo), serving free snacks at aperitivo time every day.

Argegno offers a surprising amount of facilities for a quaint lakeside fishing village – 5 good restaurants/pizzerias, 2 excellent wine bars (Enoteca and Bar Colombo), serving free snacks at aperitivo time every day. There are 2 banks with cash points and a small store. And you won’t be able to resist Andrea’s home-made ice creams (made with whatever is available fresh that day, including cucumber!). The scent of the bakery will draw you up the narrow alleyways to find fresh brioche (croissants) and bread, baked daily on the premises by Louisa. Buy fresh vegetables from Mario and ask him for one of his superb recipes – always served with smile and he speaks excellent English. If that wasn’t enough, the village also now boasts a beautician and 2 hairdressers!

Argegno is also within striking distance of all Lake Como’s treasures, as it is a main bus and ferry stop-off point for the rest of the lake. Villa Balbianello (Star Wars & James Bond) is just around the corner, Villa Carlotta a short ferry ride away, as are Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna – get a centre lake ticket and visit all three in one day. The village is certainly of Roman origin, as it owes its’ name to the consul Publio Cesio Archigene. At one time Argegno was part of a defensive system, which extended as far as the ancient villa of Lenno and the Isola Comacina to obstruct the passage of invaders. At one time Argegno was part of a defensive system, which extended as far as Lenno and the Isola Comacina to obstruct the passage of invaders. The ancient centre of the village is very picturesque. It is crossed by the Telo stream and is divided into two parts, which are joined by an old stone bridge with a lancet arch.

It is possible to take a cable car up to Pigra (881 m), which is situated on a plateau with a beautiful view of the lake. From here it is possible to go on to the Valle della Camoggia, which is in the oasis of Argegno-Cima della Duaria, a conservation area. The road which runs along Val d’Intelvi also starts from Argegno and about 15 km along it one comes to Lanzo.

The Sanctuary of Sant’Anna: This was built in the seventeenth century but it was subsequently renovated. Inside one can find stuccowork and frescoes from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The Oratory of San Rocco in Pigra: Built in the fifteenth century, it contains frescoes from 1662 signed by S. Pozzi.

"Wonderful Holiday in Great Surroundings"

We looked for a base in the Como area suitable for four couples. It had to be comfortable, clean, airy, with modern facilities, well equipped kitchen and above all a great view, not to forget an essential swimming pool. Our purpose was to have a nightly base from which we could travel at our leisure around the beautiful surroundings of Lake Como, and at the same time we could stay and have our meals on the premises. After reviewing the internet, we thought Villa Rosa would fit our needs. We arrived at the Villa after Jonny led us uphill in front of our car. We found the house exactly as advertised and the view from the terrace was absolutely stunning. Villa Rosa was exactly what we needed and I'm happy we found it as such. I can only add to the Villa's description the helpful, good humoured attitude of Beverley and Jonny, the managers. I'll always remember the good advice I got from that couple mostly about tips, do's and don'ts during our outings and trips. Any problem or request was dealt immediately. I strongly recommend it. Excellent value for our money.

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. We do everything we can to ensure that our guests enjoy their time on Lake Como. We look forward to welcoming you again to this beautiful Lake in the near future.

"Excellent location. Well equipped large house with all facilities needed for a great holiday"

Villa Rosa is located just above the village of Argegno. We were accompanied by Jonny on his scooter who met us near the church in the village centre. Following him uphill for a few minutes, we arrived at this stunning villa with the most amazing lake views we could have dreamed about. The lake was laid out at our feet, a light plane was flying above the lake and we were higher than it was. We could see numerous villages all around us, with hills at our sides and a wood right behind us. The property was well maintained and fitted exactly to its description. There was even an iron and ironing board. All our needs were tendered for by both Beverley and Jonny without any delay and in good humoured spirits. The kitchen was well equipped and we took breakfast each day on the panoramic terrace overlooking the lake and our own private, secluded pool. A great selection of quaint restaurants around (in Argegno, Bellagio, Sala Comacina etc), provided those local meals we had waited for so long to visit. We bought provisions from Lenno (2 well stocked supermarkets) 15 minutes' drive to the north from Villa Rosa. The days were very hot (31 degrees centigrade) so the lovely pool was well appreciated. No air conditioning was needed as open windows provided ample ventilation, night and day. No mosquitoes. There is so much to see in the area. We took a day trip to St. Moritz in Switzerland, a visit that deserves more than a day to absorb, but Como lured us back. To wrap this up, I would recommend both this lovely, well maintained villa and the superb location. It represented excellent value for our money.

"Be very careful before you rent this villa"

Views were exceptional, BIG ant problem inside, the road to villa is unbelieveable, and detracted big time from the overall experience. Parking is at best a huge challenge, we had small cars, need 1 person in front & 1 behind to guide the way out of the provided parking, still experienced damage to side view mirror. I would never rent this villa again, was a huge disapointment. In 1 bath to sit on toilet had to put feet in shower! Lots of little things like no ice trays.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at Villa Rosa. As you can see from the other reviews everybody has been very positive. We are always only a phone call away if you had needed us. This sumer has been incredibly hot and there are more ants than usual. Unfortunately other than putting ant killer down, there is not a lot we can do. Ice bags are provided in the top cupboard above the freezer. You must not have seen them - sorry! We do stress that the road is steep on our property descriptions and we come down to the village to meet you personally to guide you up the first time. Once you have done it a few times, most people find it really very easy. I am so sorry that your experience was not a good one!

"extraordinary views. Spent hours on the balcony drinking in the vista (along with the vino)""

A tranquil, spacious, hideaway with the most glorious of views. The walk down to the bakery, through hundreds of years of history, was mesmerising and the walk back up was memorable (for my lungs!) Beautiful pool and clean, modern accommodation.

"Excellent, very welll equiped villa in stunning location with breathtaking views"

Everything perfect really. Only problem we encountered was navigating the steep road access. Not impossible but needed care and we being a large group hired a large people carrier which made it worse. Had we know in advance the difficulty we would probably have hired two smaller vehicles. Would suggest when people book they are given some guidance in this regard. La Brea restaurant which is the one closest to the villa was very good and would highly recommend.

"Wonderful view"

The house is quiet tricky to find. But just driving through this small streets in the hills, give you a feeling of Italy. The view you get there is just amazing. You can lay in the pool, sit on the balcony and you have this stunning panorama. The house is very new build and in good shape. I can recommend it for every big group.
