The Arezzo area
The first information on Pieve di Bagno dates back to 871 AC. After the domination of the Count Guidi family from the end of XI century up to 1404, and the short parenthesis under the Gambacorti family, Val di Bagno passed under the control of the Florentines who founded the “Capitanato ". Over the years the Florentine influence has been very strong and in the territory of Bagno there is much evidence of these bonds such as, for instance, the magnificient XIV century Palazzo dei. Capitani. During the XV century the Baths of S.Maria in Bagno drew illustrious personalities, such as Benvenuto Cellini, Giuliano and Giovanni De’ Medici. Bagno di Romagna remained part of “Tuscan Romagna” (province of Florence) until 1923, when it was returned to the province of Forlì.
Bagno di Romagna Terme is an old village nestling in the green of the Tuscan-Romagna Appennines, at 500 metres above sea-level and it lies at the edge of Foresta della Lama, a vast environmental treasure that includes Sasso Fratino, Italy’s first natural reserve: this is all that remains of the great woodland that covered the Old Continent after the last glacial period. In the National Park of Campigna, Falterona and Casentino woods you can hear the echoes of the rich fauna in its natural habitat: roe-deer, deer, mouflons, wild-boars, hares and squirrels can be seen during a lovely walk which ends up in a valley: trout dart about in clear streams. Easy to reach thanks to the E 45 motorway linking Umbria, Tuscany and the Adriatic coast, Bagno di Romagna welcomes you to its magnificent mountains and offers you the oldest, simplest and most efficient answer to stress: nature. Moreover, the climate in this part of Appennines will offer you warm, clear, sunny days from May to September.
In addition to horseback, riding or hiking in the above Foresta della Lama, the area is dotted with small lakes in
the green chestnuts forests, where you can enjoy fishing or gathering mushrooms and chestnuts.
Bagno di Romagna is known for its famous ancient hot springs with a natural temperature of 45° C, discovered by the Romans in 266 BC.To-day three modern spas offer a wide range of treatments based on the water and thermal mud, rounded out by health and beauty packages and fitness activities.
The Touring Club of Italy has awarded Bagno di Romagna its “Orange Flag” , that indicates quality tourist service and a pristine environment.
The local cuisine is truly outstanding . Over the year the country was influenced by the gastronomic traditions of
Tuscany and Romagna: the fusion of these two cultures has given rise to some tempting proposal which are worth discovering, tasting and appreciating. Beside some dishes of a clear Romagna flavour, such as lasagne, tagliatelle, ravioli, passatelli, tortellini, etc, you will find the very simple dishes from the Tuscan tradition which greatly emphasizes healthy and genuine products of the earth. The aromas and flavours of the local cuisine await you in elegant restaurants or in trattorias with their simple and informal atmosphere, which we will be very pleased to suggest you.
Every year, late in July you can enjoy the Captain’s Festivity: a dramatic entertaining historical re-enactment of an episode in Bagno di Romagna's remote past, the investiture of a new Captain (local Governor): parades with over 200 costumed participants, banquets and period music.
