The Tuscany region
Tuscany is known for its welcoming and friendly people, superb cuisine, wine and beautiful cities such as Florence, Siena and Pisa. Lucignano is based in southern Tuscany where some of the best Italian wines and olive oil are produced.
Found in the southern part of Tuscany between Chianti and Umbria are some of the most beautiful Tuscan towns and historic vineyards such as Montalcino and Montepulciano. These towns also have a delightful selection of restaurants providing the finest Tuscan cuisine. The bigger towns are Siena, Arezzo and Pienza. World famous iconic Siena provides the backdrop for fine examples of Gothic architecture having stunning piazzas including - il Campo – the stage for the famous Palio horse race. The Palio is an important event in the calendar for Siena and takes place in July and August.
Arezzo is the largest town near to Lucignano. It is steeped in renaissance history and remains a prosperous centre of the jewellery business. Arezzo has a large monthly anitique market on the first Sunday of each month. Montepulciano, also nearby is a hilltop town and was a centre of artistic life in the Renaissance. The surrounding vineyards are some of the best in Italy and are the source of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. In addition, Pienza has wonderful churches, public buildings and private residences of all sizes, the town has a large number of antique and home decoration stores that are among the best in Italy.
Arezzo / Lucignano area
Lucignano, known as a little Cortona, is a beautiful medieval hilltop village about 50km south of Florence. The village is a historic walled citadel with a wealth of Italian history and structures. In the evenings the town comes to life with various inexpensive restaurants and osterias catering for every taste. The centre of the town acts as a centre point for the local villagers to conduct their more leisurely pursuits of talking, walking and taking coffee. The same relaxing approach can be found in the working town of Sinalunga nearby, where again there are a selection of inexpensive restaurants each vying to provide an excellent selection of Tuscan foods. The evening boules with the locals is always worth a look. The Piazza in Sinalunga houses a travelling market every Tuesday which is ideal for simple shopping, and at which they sell roasted pig, fresh fish, vegetables, leather goods, clothing, shoes … etc. There are several evening festivals (Festas) held in the Piazza and nearby villages throughout the summer as well as classical historic events and art exhibitions taking place in the main towns. Shopping is easy with several nearby supermarkets and discount designer shopping malls. Sinalunga also has sheltered and open tennis courts. There is also the Crocodile Aqua Park 20 minutes drive away at Monte San Savino and various hotels with swimming pools and evening music.
Whether it be relaxation or cultural exploration, Casa Luisa provides a beautiful, scenic, Italian experience and is only a short distance from the historic landmarks of Siena, Cortona, Perugia, Assisi, lake Trasimeno with Tuoro providing a lakeside beach and café/fish restaurants some 20 minutes away.
Southern Tuscany is historically famous for its health spas. Most originate from Roman times and there are 2 spas near the house at Rapalano Terme (10km), on the way to Siena from the house just off the SS71. Both spas enjoy hot/warm water both outdoors and indoors throughout the year. As you can expect throughout all of Italy children are welcome and it is a great place to spend the day. Please take along your swimming costume, flip flops and a bath robe so you can walk around the complex.
For day visits, the historic cities of Florence and Rome, San Geminiano and Grosetto and Castiglione della Pescaia on the coast are all within reach.
The house is ideally situated to choose the mix of holiday that you wish.
