The Menorca region
Menorca is the smallest of the Balearic Islands and much quieter than it's bigger sisters!!
May is a wonderful month as the countryside is green and full of wild flowers. June is starting to get warmer and you will find the beaches still quite quiet. July is busy with English visitors and August is the favourite holiday month for Spanish mainlanders and other Europen visitors - the beaches will be busy! There are roughly 120 of these! Some in tourist areas with sun beds, brollies and pedaloes, beach bars & restaurants and some that you have to walk or sail to that are still unspoilt and you'll need to take a picnic lunch (and plenty of water) as there is nothing there!!!
The fruit and veg market in the capital Mahón is well worth a visit. Set in the old cloisters you can smell all the local produce as you walk in! Here you will find everything from Menorcan cheeses and cured sausages, to traditional summer footwear made with "old tyre" soles, Menorcan gin made to a recipe shown to the locals in the 18th century by the British troops when stationed here and even be able to have a cold beer and a " tapa" amongst the locals at the Market Café.
Watersports have become very popular over recent years for tourists and locals alike. There is an assortment of possible activities including Sailing, Diving, Kayaking, Boat or Yacht hire, Surfing, Fishing, Water-skiing….
Most of these activities can be found in Fornells, Mahón harbour and the South Coast. There are clubs and courses, for beginners and the more experienced, all age groups and all year around.
Try Dives and snorkelling at S'Algar Dive Centre are very popular. The sea around Menorca is very clear and the summer water temperatures are lovely and warm.
KAYAKING is very easy to learn. You can hire a Kayak and pick your own route or go on a guided tour, try the centre at Es Grau. There is an annual “round the Island” event with conferences and workshops in October.
SAILING has always been popular here, as there is often a breeze even at the height of the summer. Again there are courses for all levels.
You can hire speed boats, yachts, the traditional Menorcan fishing boat called a “Llaut”, with or without a Skipper, sometimes with champagne included!
If you need any help finding or booking any of the above, I'm happy to help!
Arenal d'en Castell
Just 20 kms north of Mahon amongst an attractive area of rocky headlands is the picturesque resort of Arenal d'en Castell. The urbanization has been built above and around the wide bay, overlooking the sands of the long beach and the sea. The waters are shallow and warm, therefor ideal for families with children
By the beach there are some good restaurants and beach bars ideal for quick snacks or cold drinks to take a break from all that lazing in the sun! And in the evenings these restaurants come alive and offer a superb range of food, enough to cater for everyone's taste and pocket.
Nearby you will find several shops to browse around, duty free boutiques, supermarkets, a chemist and a medical centre.
