The Menorca region
Menorca is the smallest of the Balearic Islands and much quieter than it's bigger sisters!!
May is a wonderful month as the countryside is green and full of wild flowers. June is starting to get warmer and you will find the beaches still quite quiet. July is busy with English visitors and August is the favourite holiday month for Spanish mainlanders and other Europen visitors - the beaches will be busy! There are roughly 120 of these! Some in tourist areas with sun beds, brollies and pedaloes, beach bars & restaurants and some that you have to walk or sail to that are still unspoilt and you'll need to take a picnic lunch (and plenty of water) as there is nothing there!!!
The fruit and veg market in the capital Mahón is well worth a visit. Set in the old cloisters you can smell all the local produce as you walk in! Here you will find everything from Menorcan cheeses and cured sausages, to traditional summer footwear made with "old tyre" soles, Menorcan gin made to a recipe shown to the locals in the 18th century by the British troops when stationed here and even be able to have a cold beer and a " tapa" amongst the locals at the Market Café.
Arenal d'en Castell
Just 20 kms north of Mahon amongst an attractive area of rocky headlands is the picturesque resort of Arenal d'en Castell. The urbanization has been built above and around the wide bay, overlooking the sands of the long beach and the sea.
By the beach there are some good restaurants and beach bars ideal for quick snacks or cold drinks to take a break from all that lazing in the sun!
In the evenings these restaurants come alive and offer a superb range of food, enough to cater for everyone's taste and pocket. Nearby you will find several shops to browse around, duty free boutiques, supermarkets, a chemist and a medical centre.
