The Ardnamurchan Peninsula region

Situated on the Stunning West Coast of Scotland, Ardnamurchan is a long, narrow peninsula along the shores of Loch Sunart and includes the most westerly tip of the British Mainland.

Ardnamurchan is proud to be uncrowded and unhurried. The sun sets later here and the pace of life is slower. The relaxed pace will soon draw you in as you explore the varied landscape and pretty villages. Laundry Cottage provides the perfect base to enjoy the region from.

The area is well known for its local crafts – stained glass, batik, woodcrafts and jewellery are just some of the hand-made local specialities you'll find. In addition, there are visitor attractions to see including the Nadurra Visitor Centre.

Ardnamurchan lighthouse is the most westerly point on the British mainland – whales and dolphins are sometimes seen off the coast here. The white sandy beaches are clean and quiet and offer spectacular views to the Small Isles. The Sunart Oakwood near Strontian has a wildlife hide and fantastic information of the natural and human history of the area. History is visible throughout the region - from castles and the remains of cleared villages, to more recent WW2 training areas.

The road past Glenuig and Kinlochmoidart passes secluded bays and friendly crafting townships, before linking up with the Road to the Isles. From Acharacle, cruise Loch Shiel and retrace the route that Bonnie Prince Charlie took to Glenfinnan.

Ardnamurchan Peninsula

Acharacle lies on the western end of Loch Shiel and is surrounded by beautiful scenery making it a popular holiday destination for hill climbers and naturalists. It has, among other resources, a small primary school with around 60 pupils, a hotel (The Loch Shiel Hotel, which also contains a shop), a garage, a baker's shop, fish and chip shop, and a grocery store as well as a doctor's surgery. It has the main postal sorting office for the peninsula of Ardnamurchan, which has a cafe on site.

Acharacle is about 6 km from the Dorlin Beach, where the ruins of Castle Tioram lie. The population is about 300. It is connected to the towns of Mallaig on the west coast and Fort William by a mixed dual and single track road to the villages north and by road south and east and then ferry at Ardgour to Fort William and Oban.

It is a main centre for deer stalking on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. It supports salmon and trout fishing in Loch Shiel (subject to local fishing rights) and sea fishing from Loch Sunart which is nearby. Sheep farming and crofting are to be found locally and in due course a new distillery is to be built close to the village.

Laundry Cottage nestles in the picturesque hamlet of Shielfoot – a short distance from Acharacle. It forms part of an old servants block and has been tastefully renovated, retaining many original features. It is set on a quiet single track road a short drive from Castle Tioram.
