Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, which was built in 1849, is located at the most westerly

point of mainland Britain. Prior to automation in 1988, a Principal Lightkeeper and an

Assistant, with their families, lived at the lighthouse in cottages built at the same time.

The families were almost self-sufficient, and would have kept sheep and cows at the

station. Lightkeeping was a remote, lonely and hard existence.

After falling into a state of disrepair in the years since automation they have now

been fully restored. Situated directly beside the lighthouse, Keeper Cottage West

offers a unique experience for the self-catering visitor.

The Scottish Highlands region

Ardnamurchan, Mainland Britain's most westerly point, is an ideal family retreat. It is peaceful, unhurried and friendly with miles of clean sandy beaches, coves and spectacular sea views. It is reached by an incredibly beautiful wooded road, running with ever-changing views along Loch Sunart to the Ardnamurchan lighthouse, which, at 22 miles further west than Land's End is the most westerly point on the British mainland.

Ardnamurchan is located on the famously stunning West Coast of Scotland and is a long, narrow peninsula along the shores of Loch Sunart. It includes the most westerly tip of the British Mainland.

Ardnamurchan is popular with those who are looking for a quiet remote holiday with masses of wildlife on land and water. There are mountains to climb, lochs and sea to fish and a surprisingly good selection of pubs and restaurants. Protected by its remoteness, this unique ecology hosts many rare plants and wildlife, including otters, pine martens, wildcats, deer, seals, dolphins, whales, sea-eagles and a variety of other birds.
