About this location
The Poitou-Charentes region
Niort & Angloueme are equidistant from the chateau. Make a visit on a Thursday or at the weekend to the morning market at Niort. It is a 45 minute journey. Afterwards you should see the Marais Poitvin, (often known as Venise Vert) with its miles of peaceful canals . Alternatively a family trip to the historic port of La Rochelle which offers superb shopping and an aquarium for the children. The quayside restaurants feature freshly caught fish. Also worth visiting in this region are the distilleries of Cognac the potteries of Limoges. Futurescope at Poitiers, the ramparts at Angloueme and the Valley de Singes (Monkey Valley).
Chef Boutonne's highlight is the fairytale chateau of Jarvacay with its huge lake. (If you want to fish the lake; day passes are available). You can walk there in 20 minutes. It is also conveniently close for getting the morning croissants being a 5 minute drive on a country lane. The baker does visit Ardilleux but you have to listen for his horn! The small town has two supermarkets and a Saturday market when local produce is available. Other local places of interest are the silver mines at Melle which date from the 5th century and the fabulous Royal Abbey at Celles. When visiting use the opportunity to break for a picnic in the countryside.
