Arcos Casa
About the home
Perched on top of a rocky limestone ridge, Arcos de la Frontera is one of the most striking villages in Spain. Its whitewashed houses and stone churches wind upwards into the old town, stopping abruptly as the sheer cliff face dramatically plunges down to the valley of the river Guadalete below.
The house was originally one of Spain's first public granaries in the 17th century. Now completely renovated, with three double bedrooms plus one spare room with two single beds, it sleeps eight easily. Located in the heart of the old town, it's a few minutes walk from the main square and local bars and restaurants. Many of the processions of local fiestas pass directly in front of the house, providing a great place to watch the festivities.
Arcos has some of the most spectacular fiestas running throughout the year—a traditional Spanish experience: flamenco, sherry, tapas and long warm evenings. There is also a nearby golf course, and lake where you can sail.

The Andalucia / Cadiz Province region
Situated in the South-Western province of Cadiz—the heart of Spain’s sherry region—Arcos was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1962 in recognition of its exceptional architecture and impressive location. The old town is a tangled labyrinth of cobbled streets and alleys that lead up to the churches of Santa Maria de la Asuncion and San Pedro. From the square at the top, there are spectacular views of the Andalusian countryside.
A 20 minute drive from Arcos, you will find Jerez de la Frontera—renowned for its sherry and brandy production, as well as its fine horses and Flamenco. The town also dates back to Moorish times and has a charming old town and palm lined squares. Jerez is also famous for Flamenco, and the flamenco festival of Jerez at the end of February is one of the most important in the world.
Another 20 minutes to the West, and you reach the Costa de la Luz—200 miles of unspoilt coast line and shimmering white beaches. There are plenty of tranquil spots along the coast between Puerto de Santa Maria and Tarifa. You can always find good seafood and tapas restaurants too up and down the coast.
Like Arcos, there are many other Pueblos Blancos throughout the province, which share a history involving the centuries-long fight of the Spaniards to reconquer Spain. Medina Sidonia, Vejer de la Frontera, Olvera and Grazalema are but a few worth visiting. Or travel further East to the town of Ronda, the birthplace of modern bull fighting and a favourite of Hemmingway.
Along the way, you will pass through the beautiful countryside of the Sierra de Grazalema - a 50,000 hectare protected natural park. There is lots to do if you are looking for an active holiday: from walking to horse riding, to learning to paraglide, wind or kite surf. The main cities in the area are Seville – an easy 60 minute drive away, and Cadiz on the coast.
The Arcos de la Frontera / Casco Antiguo area
There’s plenty to do in and around Arcos all year round. A few minutes’ drive from Arcos, you will find A championship 18-hole golf course. It is versatile enough to challenge top level amateur and professional players yet can also accommodate novices and has its own practise area. Close by, you can also try horse riding through the Andalusian countryside. And there are plenty of other opportunities in the Sierras if you feel like exploring further afield (see website for details).
Arcos has events and fiestas throughout the year. The most original in the region is the week before Christmas, when the old town is transformed into ancient Bethlehem as Arcos stages its own nativity play—the Belen Viviente—on a gigantic scale. Arcos has its own carnival celebrations in February – one of the parades passing directly in front of the house. For those wanting to continue the fiesta, Cadiz offers 10 days of non-stop revelry.
Come springtime, the warm evenings see the local people dining out on the terraces long into the evening. During Semana Santa, the week leading up to Easter, the processions pass through the old and new town, followed by a local marching band playing traditional music, and long lines of people in traditional costumes. Each float depicts a scene from the bible from holy week, and is carried between the ancient churches.
There is a great view from the house, and you can watch several of the processions from the balcony as they pass by on the street below, the scent of jasmin and incense rising up into the warm evenings.
On Easter Sunday, Arcos has its own celebrated bull run—el Toro de Aleluya—where locals and the odd foreigner demonstrate their bravery. The weekend following Easter is the Moto Grand Prix of Jerez, where Arcos plays host to many of the competitors and fans.
The Cruces de Mayo—the crosses of May—is another local tradition in which the patios and courtyards are decorated with floral arrangements in the shape of crosses. As Summer begins, so do las carpas—a series of concerts, fiestas and performances which take place at different venues throughout Arcos. There are weekly flamenco concerts throughout July and August.
Flamenco also features during the celebration of the Virgin de las Nieves—the Virgin of the Snows which takes place during the first weekend of August. And as Summer draws to a close at the end of September, Arcos celebrates the fiesta of its patron saint—the Feria de San Miguel.
