The Marche region
Marche is one of the 20 regions of Italy. In English, this region is also known as the Marches.
The name of the region derives from the plural name of marca, originally referring to the medieval March of Ancona and nearby marches of Camerino and Fermo.
The region is located in the Central area of the country, bordered by Emilia-Romagna and the republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany to the north-west, Umbria to the west, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Except for river valleys and the often very narrow coastal strip, the land is hilly. In the nineteenth century, a railway from Bologna to Brindisi ran along the coastline of the entire territory. Inland, the mountainous nature of the region, even today, allows little travel north and south, except by rough roads over the passes.
One of the 18 villages of the municipality of Arcevia. Situated at 225 m above sea level , on a gentle hill overlooking the valley of the river Misa about 30 km of the coast.
The name of the village is linked to the presence of an ancient medieval castle , built around the year 1000. Military stronghold and administrative center of relief.
For a long time the castle was owned by the Abbey of St. Helena sull'Esino , until it passed to the Bishop of Senigallia studies of the historical Polverari revealed that the castle depended for some time from San Vittore of the Dams .
The first real expansion of Arcevia occurred around the valley of the Thousand and Misa submitted Castiglioni in 1208 . Following numerous reprisals , the castle was heavily damaged in 1223 and passed definitively under the Rocca Contrada .
The fifteenth century saw Castiglioni suffer no more violent assault by Braccio da Montone, and barricaded themselves here Ghibelline troops of Louis Enhanced. After a tough battle, and a violent looting the castle was taken .
In 1801, the patrician Fabio Septic built the tower with clock and door.
The walls of the castle still retain two large towers made ??for defensive purposes.
Among the artistic beauty of the place we remember the fifteenth century church , dedicated to St. Agatha and renovated in 2002. It has a stone façade, and it houses a painting of Hercules citizen Arcevia Ramazzani ( " Our Lady of the Rosary" , painted in 1589 and a precious wooden crucifix from the late fifteenth century.
Outside the walls is an ancient Romanesque Abbey "St. Mary of the Plains " adorned with a fresco of St Sebastian dating back to around 1400 .
