The Lazio region

The region of Lazio, rich of culture and nature, is situated in the centre of Italy.

Hilly landscapes with olive- and vine cultivations and the lakes Bracciano and Bolzena characterizes the north of the region. The culturally heydays are the famous Etruscan excavation and the sulphur-wells, where you can spoil your skin under the open sky.

Rome is the culturally and economically center as well as the capital city of Italy, located directly in the heartland of Lazio.

Mountains are in the south, rising above 2000 meters; lower, heading the coast the gentle green slopes are overgrown with orange-and lemon trees and olive-and vine cultivations.

The coast is uneven, sandy beaches alternate rocky cliffs, suggestive little bays and hills are covered with Mediterranean spontaneous vegetation (macchia mediterranea).

Thousands of years of history signed the landscape, increasing the cultural value of this land:  Excavations from the Roman and the pre-Roman time (Etruscan, Ausonia and Aurunci), medieval towns, monasteries and convents, make the stay in Lazio always an astonishing experience.

The region has many nature reserves and little protected oasis; very beautiful for short walks, hiking tours or trekking.

The Garigliano river natural park at the board with Campania offers multiple opportunities to come in contact with the lush river vegetation and the wild animals that inhabit along the banks.

Thermal springs are to find in the region of Viterbo, Tivoli and Fiuggi and in the south in Suio.

Located in the south of the region, The Pontine Islands join sensational nature, clear water, characteristic fisher towns and Roman culture. The main Island Ponza is also called pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The food and wine tradition might deserve its own chapter: fish and seafood on the coast; rustically cuisine in the countryside (meat and sausage, cheese and a lot of different vegetables), buffalo mozzarella, and olives of Gaeta are only some examples.

Lots of tasty and important wines are available for experts and curious tasters, thanks to the unique warm weather and the composition of the soil.

The area between south of Lazio and northern Campania, named Campania Felix by the ancient Roman, produces since centuries a particular wine, called Falernus, one of the many wine excellence of the area.

Arce

Arce is a commune (municipality) in the province of Frosinone, in the region of Lazio, Italy. It is an agricultural centre located on a hill overlooking the Via Casilina, in the middle valley of the Liri.

Arce is situated on the ancient road Via Casilina, today known as freeway SS 6 (Rome - Campania) and on the highway Autostrada del Sole A1, (Mailand - Naples).

The nature reserve Lago di San Giovanni Incarico / Isoletta comprise the region of the ancient cities Fregellae and Fabrateria Nova as well as the watery region at the confluence of Sacco and Liri. It is a living space for many waterfowl.

The area of Ciociaria is located in the province of Frosinone - an area with many traditions like events, music festivals, processions, performance of singers and groups, the illuminations and fireworks. All performance are shown with typical traditional costumes, music and rites as well as the traditional cooking - this way, the originals keep their culture and country alive till today... and with a special dialect in their language. Ciociaria means the same like "the land of sandals". The name trace one's original from Ciòcie. Ciòcie are traditional, with leather-bound straps at the lower legs from the sandals of the shepards of the mountain regions. It should be an allusion to the people's poorness of the region.

What do you have to expect here? A spectacular mountain landscape, delicious traditional cooking with many ancient recipes, open-minded and helpful origins and surely NO mass tourism, because this region isn't much tourist relevated, in spite of the beauty.

The car factory of Fiat near Cassino is one of the most important economic centres of the region. Many of the population are living from the agriculture untill today - often the farms are used as proceed additionally. Mainly production: Olive oil, wine, meat, milk, cheese, honey...
