The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
Arcais is a typical village in the Marais Poitevin, at the heart of the canal network, with very friendly locals, many of whom have lived there all their lives. It is located in the heart of the Venise Verte or Green Venice, so called because of the tiny green weed which covers the miles of meandering waterways and can be explored by hiring a boat from the small cobbled port in the village. It is the prettiest and most renowned part of the Marais Poitevin, an unusual yet captivating and undiscovered part of France, set in a National Park.
The chic town of La Rochelle with harbourside seafood restaurants, Aquarium and old town with boutiques is a 30-40 minute drive. You can take various boat trips including a trip around Fort Boyard.
The child friendly, safe, sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are also 30-40 minutes drive, one of our favourites being Chatelaillon-Plage which also has a wonderful water park..
Or you can spend a day out on the islands of Ile de Re or Ile d’Oleron with many hidden beach areas.
Arcais area
Although Arcais is still essentially a small village, it has many facilities which include a Co-Op (open 8am to 8pm) Delicatessen, Butchers, Baker, Post Office, Tourist Information Office, Tabac with Grill, an award winning Restaurant, Creperie/Pizzeria/Ice cream Parlour/Bar, Antique shop, a grassed Picnic area with bar and various artisan craft shops.
The area is very well known for cycling and there is an excellent cycle hire shop in the village with miles and miles of safe cycle paths.
You can even take a tour of the area in a horse and cart - bear in mind the tour is in French, but it is a lovely experience even if you don’t understand much! The horses are kept in a field just past the cottages and the owner rides them bareback past the cottages everyday on their way to work.

Guestbook for Redrose Cottage
I have been meaning to write back and both congratulate you and thank you for your lovely cottages. It must have been extremely hard work to get them looking so lovely and giving them a very homely feel. We all thoroughly enjoyed our week in Arcais made the better because of the accommodation. The area around there is beautiful and we visited lots of places including La Rochelle, Rochfort all the way as far as Lacanau. Please also pass on our appreciation to your caretakers as the cottage was very clean and tidy when we arrived and the welcome pack was much appreciated as we arrived slightly later than anticipated! We wish you all every success with your holiday cottages and do hope that we are able to revisit in the not too distant future. Thank you again,Best wishes and kind regards from Glen, Maxine and Thierry.
All in all, we had a wonderful time, in a very interesting area. Thank you again. The restaurant in the village is wonderful some of the best food we have ever eaten. Jonathan Sturt
Dear Michelle, I just wanted to say what a lovely place you have in Arcais. We had a great time and thought the village was the best in the area, we managed to catch a musical festival in the square and ate in 'La Gourmandise' quite a bit (the owners also have a 1 year old). My parents were also very impressed with the cottage and I'm sure they will be contacting your builder. Do you have any photo's of the cottages pre-renovation?
many thanks Amanda
