The Languedoc-Roussillon region
A varied and beautiful area with wonderful landscapes An hour from the Mediterranean and its beaches at Narbonne, Gruissan, St Pierre and beyond to Cap d'Agde and Sete.
The climate throughout the year is mild, with blue skies and sunshine even during the cold spells of winter and the summers are hot.
Carcassonne is the venue for many festivals during the summer such as the month long festival of Carcassonne with countless cultural, musical and theatrical events, outside and inside, many of them free. There are many opportunities for outdoor activities - swimming in lakes and rivers, some with cascading waterfalls, or in the many outside pools around the area, cycling, horse riding, hiking, fishing, canoeing, as well as extreme sports.
This is the perfect destination for people who want to get a feel of real France with many picturesque villages to stop off and visit, enjoying an inexpensive lunch in a pavement restaurant and watch the world go by. This is Cathar country with its dramatic Cathar castles perched up on the top of hills and the famous restored medieval fortress of Carcassonne. The village is not far from Castelnaudary, home of the regional Cassoulet dish and is an hour from the exciting, richly diverse city of Toulouse.
The Canal du Midi runs through the area, also crossing Carcassonne, giving beautiful wooded walking and cycling routes.
