The West Country / Devon region
The South West has arguably some of the most dramatic scenery in England. Within this, North Devon can boast rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, wide estuaries and a particularly intense clear estuary light, green countryside wooded valleys and open moorlands. Walk the coastal path, cycle ride the Tarka Trail or across the moor, fish in the many rivers or open seas, horse-ride along the beach or across Exmoor, surf, sail, wind-surf, kite-surf or just build your castle in the sand!
So whether you are looking to get away from it all and relax or to get active and explore, there is always something to suit all of the family in North Devon.
Wander around traditional fishing villages or along sandy beaches. Explore unspoilt landscapes and a wealth of attractions. Unwind at a spa or get active and try one of the water-sports in Devon. Many attractions have special offers and free events and there are so many natural playgrounds including Exmoor Dartmoor, and, on your doorstep, the coast.
There are great things to do in North Devon all year round!
Appledore / Watertown area
The Northam Burrows are located behind the property. This common land consists of 600 acres of coastal grassland, dunes and salt marsh. A diversity of flora and fauna share its tranquilty with grazing sheep and horses. It is also home to the Royal North Devon Golf Club which once held the British Open.
Westward Ho boasts a huge expanse of long sandy beach backed by a pebble ridge and is used for a host of activities including kite surfing, sand boarding, surfing, cricket, volleyball & much more. Instruction is available in these sports and Skern Lodge at Appledore can organise daily or weekly sessions to teach a variety of outdoor sporting activities. Westward Ho! has a long promenade and a walk through the village leads to cliff top walks which offer breathtaking scenery. It is also home to the annual ‘pot walloping’ festival .
The beautiful estuary village of Appledore nestling at the mouth of the River Torridge still supports a thriving port where trawlers can be seen landing their daily catch. You can buy fresh fish straight from the sea to take home for your supper! The village has charm and beauty tempered with a bawdy colourful historic association with the boat building and fishing industry. A maze of quaint narrow streets complete with storybook fisherman’s cottages, add an air of intrigue and mystery to an exploration of its narrow shaded alleys and cobbled courtyards. A large portion of the village has been designated as a conservation area and it has, over the years, attracted many artists, adding to its Bohemian flair and eclectic attraction. Today there are an abundance of art galleries and craft shops displaying the work of local artisans and artists work. The village is also renowned for its delicious Hockings Ice Cream which is made in Appledore and can only be bought in North Devon. The Annual Visual Arts Festival is held in the village usually in May promotes the arts, whilst a new and exciting forum for a galaxy of wonderful writers and passionate poets, The Appledore Book Festival is held in September / October.
The market town of Bideford on the banks of the River Torridge is a thriving port. The Oldenburg (carrying a maximum of 267 passengers) docks here to take travellers on evening river cruises and out to Lundy Island on day trips to see the puffin colony and dolphins and seals along the way. The town is world famous for it's New Years Eve festivities where thousands of fancy dress clad revellers gather along the Quay enjoying entertainment and awaiting the fireworks at midnight! One of the local attractions is The Big Sheep where a family day of fun can be enjoyed including racing sheep!
Further west there are hidden coves and coast path walks, including Bucks Mills & Hartland which is perhaps the wildest of all the Heritage Coastline where sheer rugged cliffs hold many wreckers tales offering magnificent views. Explore the 12th Century Abbey and glorious gardens or visit the Quay Museum.
The picturesque fishing village of Clovelly is one of the most famous villages in the world. It is a delight to explore with its worn cobbled streets and traditional whitewashed cottages carved into or clinging to the hillside festooned with fuchsias and geraniums, and tempting tearooms en route to the ancient beautiful harbour. The local Lobster & Crab Feast in September shouldn't be missed. Sea food, folk music and entertainment for the children!
On the other side of the Estuary at Instow sailing boats can be launched. Instow Yacht Club offers excellent tuition for children during the summer, with weekly courses culminating in Pelican & Open Weeks. During the Appledore and Instow Regatta, the area plays host to a comprehensive and varied list of activities for all the family to enjoy.
At Saunton (fabulous Sands Cafe/Bar), Croyde (the famous Thatch pub), Woolacombe (The Red Barn & Electric & Tides Inn) & Putsborough there are miles of sandy surfing beaches with beach huts for hire and surf lessons available. At Saunton there is also a Golf Club with 2 Championship Courses. With such a long and diverse list of activities available throughout the seasons there is always something to do whatever your age or interest in this beautiful area.
