The Devon region

Pretty coloured houses adorn this querky fisherman's village. Appledore offers a host of craft shops, venues with live music and great food. With a well stock delicatessan and local store along with crab fishing, rock-pooling there is no need to leave the village at all.

"Our place of refuge"

Holly ( the owner) posted us the keys and gave us great instructions.
Catboat is a beautifully kept, well equipped, spacious cottage. We have rented the cottage for several years and it has always been our time to "recharge the batteries". It is located among fishermans cottages on the road to the lifeboat station right in the heart of the village. Over the road from the cottage is a slipway onto the estuary. The water laps up the slipway at high tide and at low tide you can explore the shore (but take your wellies!)
The "Beaver" and " George" are 100 and 200 yards away and their food is wonderful. There is a short promenade between the 2 which hosts a firework display, in aid of the Lifeboat, at the end of October.
The beach at Westward Ho offers 2 miles of golden sand and all kinds of sport. Walks, both around the village, across the golf course and around the "skern" are breathtaking. The wild life and natural beauty of the place really helps you unwind. The village itself has lots of galleries and shops to explore.
Local places we would recommend are Instow ( especially the Boathouse Restaurant) and Hartland Quay.
Tip:- The street is too narrow to park a car outside. We unload quickly outside the cottage and then park the car (everyone does). At the side of the cottage there is a passage that leads up to a road where you can park. We have never found it difficult to park near to the top of the passage 25yds from the front door!!
